Why are Curves so noisy?

DJPadre wrote on 11/2/2007, 6:44 AM
With the A1, as the colour is very flat (even after spending 3 days tweaking teh bastard) i have devised a way to use subtle curves to really make my colour pop. Its not that different to what im doing with DV right now though.. in fact its even more subtle that that..
Im really happy with the results except for one teeny weeny thing..
noise...

how the hell do i get rid of the friggin noise??
I know i can get similar results with levels whcih is virtually noiseless, but i prefer the flexinility of curves.. that and the fact ive got about 150 presets for specific looks..

any ideas?

My first instinct is to say if the curves are introducing noise, they aren't as subtle as they should be.

You're getting colors that really pop at the expense of noise.

There used to be a "Mike's plugin" that did the job pretty well... well, in SD mode. Hold on...
Ok, here it is I think:

...look for "all Mike Crash Vegas filters"...

I re-downloaded it and just remembered how may times for one project I used the Dynamic Noise and Levels filters on real dark areas shooting and it pretty saved my arze. Nice, really nice filters.

I wonder how they work with HD now... anybody?

I use them all the time, and work great for HDV as well. I try to keep the setting at 15 or below (12 works great), otherwise it is noticably waxy. Really reduces the grain in dark reception footage.

Oh ive already got these installed.. MC's noise reduction works a treat but its a bitch to render.. the idea was to have clean subtle curves with minimal noise and to avoid using Levels for the same thing as i can really REALLY tweak curves across the range

Havent tried 32bit rendering with curves though... keep getting errors..
