Why are program updates so hidden? Plus other thoughts with Magix

It's strange to me that updates to software are not much more prominent and easier to find.

In Movie Studio Platinum 15 there is no update facility as far as I can can tell. The "check for news..." option in the help menu is grayed out. I don't see any links in the program to updates. I'm running build 116, but now that I found the update in this forum I'll be installing. With more crashes I've experienced lately, I should have looked for updates sooner. It took a good deal of time to find this forum and the post about build 146.

On the primary product website, I see nothing about program updates. This site should have links to the most current version to facilitate buyers of your software. I think that showing updates on the product page would suggest to users that Magix is dedicated to supporting customers and cares about making the process easy for them.

On the magix website when you login, it gives a list of products purchased. Again, I just checked it and re-downloaded the installer. That didn't appear to signify that it was the current version or would install the current version. Another thing related to this is that the installer doesn't offer me an option to save the downloaded files. I'd like to back them up.

It doesn't make sense that I have to dig into the community forum (mind you not the Magix one when I went to first and couldn't find any Vegas info) to find any updates.

I'm suggesting that you distribute update information more actively and globally throughout your web properties and in the programs. It's great that you do update your software. Other companies sometimes do less.

I'd really like a better experience for software I pay for in regard to keeping it as bug free as possible, which means getting easy access to updates. I've learned to save the project frequently and especially before playing back my video with any detailed edits, which is a hassle. Maybe I'm pushing the software too much these days or now that Magix is the owner testing has gotten a bit more lax. (almost everything on here: https://www.youtube.com/photographybanzai is done with Vegas Movie Studio for an example of how much I do with Movie Studio).

I want to continue with Movie Studio because I do like the interface generally and have a lot of old projects in that format. I'm hoping that you can keep the program bug free and slowly streamline/improve it (I'd really like a quality plugin for noise reduction), while also actively distributing updates.

@ccscotty

If you want to be informed about updates, you will need to check the "Use Newsfeed to stay informed about VEGAS product updates" option in the General Preferences. (This will also activate the menu option in the Help menu.)

That said, we do know of some deficiencies in this update notification mechanism, and we are working on integrating a better solution for informing users about updates. We hope to be able to roll this out to Movie Studio users in the near future.

Thanks Derek, I appreciate the response. Is anyone in Wisconsin still developing Vegas or did development move to Europe once Sony sold it? I knew someone that was an intern in Wisconsin a few years ago. She was thrilled I talked about using the software she was a part of producing (administrative/support side I believe). Can't remember her name, but she had seemed to like doing video editing with Vegas herself.

VEGAS is still primarily developed in Wisconsin.
