I noticed that, too. They also play upside-down in Power DVD. Virtual Dub will read them in correctly, but since the Cineform codec is only licensed for Vegas, you can't render out of Virtual Dub without the codec putting the Cineform logo watermark on the file. Too bad.

Did you download the Australian version?

- sorry, didn't mean to trivialise the problem, but couldn't resist ;)

Is your graphics card a dual head Matrox 'G' series?
If it is there were some tweaks for G400 that might be pertinent.

I think the cause is related to the way VideoForWindows codecs like the CineForm one provide data to the video subsystems we use today that tend to be WDM based. However I don't know the cause. One fix is to use a "right way up" filter and play in the GraphEdit tool. But that defeats the original objective.

I recall that DiVX codecs had some issues when played outside the DivX player....
B_JM wrote on 4/21/2005, 4:35 AM
the cineform HD codec that ships with vegas was supposed to be a fully lic product available to other products - so we had heard....

so usable in v-dud without the watermark ...

have to wait for the sony people to comment on that issue ..

as for upside down ... you can program media player classic to flip these - for only that codec type ...

something to do with video overlay vs. directX playback i seem to recall . if you turn hardware acceleration off - i think it also flips back ..

we have a whole thread on this issue - it is a common one ..

Yes, Vegas 6 renders 1080i upside-down. I have confirmed this early on and since it was such an obvious problem I figured it would come to light quickly. It has and now lets wait till 6.0b for a fix.

I must say I love Vegas 6, but it is the most rushed software I've bought in the last fifteen years. I hope this doesn't start an industry trend.
B_JM wrote on 4/21/2005, 4:59 AM
it doesnt play upside down on all our test systems (or on many others) -- so this is not global issue ...
DigVid wrote on 4/21/2005, 5:04 AM
Just for fun try this. Try rendering a DV file or other nonHDV file (anamorphic or not) to a 1080i intermediate (60i or 50i).

I admit it will work properly with 1080i intermediate (and even include a 720p file included on the same timeline) to 1080i intermediate file render and it WON'T flip (ie) it will play right (correct aspect ratio and all).

However, If I try to convert most anything other than that, it will, and it changes the aspect ratio to square or something (no matter if "stretch video" is checked or not).

This does not happen when converting to the 720p intermediate, all is well with that one (fingers crossed).

See my post below, but I still hope Sony finds a solution to this (maybe with MS help) in 6.0b...

well as mentioned here a 1000 times, never ever use windows media player to play back anything as it is a piece of crap ... even MS knows this as they have admitted more than once ..

DigVid wrote on 4/21/2005, 6:28 AM
Sorry to spark your ire. Us mere mortals are sometimes taken aback when a product that touts great Windows compatibility suddenly has a problem with a Windows component.

Upon further investigation I concur that Vegas 6.0a will playback the DV to 1080i intermediate files correctly inside itself.

So, I guess at this point, I hope MS finds a fix for its media player, as I for one don’t want to search the Internet for one more full screen playback fix. Geez, clicking on files can get one into so much trouble.

Thanks! :-)

just use Media player classic

Well, I still get upside-down and square looking 1080i (avi) intermediates, when played through windows media player 10, even if I render 1080i m2t files to 1080 avi files.

Yes, the 1080i m2t files will play (poorly but at least in the correct aspect ratio and right side up). However, 1080i avi intermediate files don't play right.

Oh well, who cares!

B_JM wrote on 4/22/2005, 7:07 AM
as mentioned a 1000 times in the past - NO version of windows media player will play aspect ratios correctly 100% of the time .. nor can you adjust for desktop vs. broadcast AR diff.

Windows Media Player is crap - a toy - get and use a real player and throw that one to the dogs ..

it is NOT a sony/vegas issue .. take it up with microsoft .. (tell them your name is David Zamos and they might jump through hoops) ..

They have stated they are in the process of a complete revamp of Windows Media Player - though I dont hold out much hope for it being reduced from a bloated piece of spyware with no real functionality other than some kind of toy ...

GARoss,

Okay, yes, we are on the same wavelength on this. I like you get the same results the only problem I am having with AR and flipping is the CineForm 1080i avi. The CineForm 1080i m2t plays fine (even with default Windows Media Player 10 settings - and "high quality mode" checked). So, I'm fine with this. I just won't play CF 1080i avi files outside Vegas 6. Thanks!

B_JM,

I'm afraid I currently have no need or desire to get rid of WMP10 at this time. I know it's not very versatile, yada, yada; but I have limited problems with it with my limited file workload using it and just don't like playing with this area of XP. I, like others, do value your knowledgeable insights though. Thanks!

options- > output (many many choices) , there are tool tips on each of the options ..

also change setting for rescale to bicubic AR1.0

On my machine, using Connect HD v1.6, the Cineform .avi files play correctly in WMP 10 with the correct aspect ratio. Using Vegas 6 to produce the Cineform .avi. files, they play back upside down with the wrong aspect ratio. Go figure.
DigVid wrote on 4/23/2005, 9:38 AM
Ha - gotcha!
Xander wrote on 4/23/2005, 4:07 PM
In follow up to my previous post, installing Connect HD 1.6 fixes this upside down / aspect ratio issue with Cineform .avi files from both Vegas 6 and Connect HD. When I uninstall Connect HD 1.6, then all my Cineform .avi files from both Vegas 6 and Connect HD flip back upside down in WMP 10!!
