why is rendering so slooooooow

Why is rendering so unbelievably slow? I'm encoding a 4 minute DV clip to the new mpeg-1 plugin, no effects, no adjustments, all I'm doing is changing format and total time is going to be 28-29 minutes. I've heard that Vegas is about the same, so what is Sonic Foundry doing to make their software so much slower than practically anyone else's?

Three things you might try:

1. When doing "Render As", on the 'project' tab, make sure the "Resample the frame rate of all video" box is unchecked. Unless your project uses video of differing frame rates than the video clips youa re using, this option will not provide any video improvement, but it sure increases rendering time.

2. Defragment your hard drive periodically. (I do so once per week.) Video files are huge, and get scattered all over the hard drive if you don't do so.

3. Turn off all other applications besides VF, including all virus checkers and screensavers. Rendering speed is dramitically increased if the VF is the olnly thing running!

I don't have the resample frame rate option at all.

But none of these suggestions get to the real problem. My system is a dual P3-933 with 768M of RAM. It's not low on resources, something is fundamentally wrong with how VideoFactory renders. I can pull the same file into a free tool like TmpGenc and render an mpeg of equal or better quality in 8 minutes. I expect at least that performance out of a program I actually paid for.
