Why is this Blu-Ray Burner Cheap?

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the proposed workarounds. I'm, probably forced to something like what you proposed with my urgent project.

BUT - the question still remains - WHY does the LG GGW-H20L Blu-ray drive crash XP x64 when accessed by VP and DVDA, but not with other vendor's software?

Has ANYONE got this drive to work with Vegas on an XP x64 OS???

EDIT: I was able to capture the blue screen with my videocam. It says:

PNF_LIST_CORRUPT

Any of you computer gurus, what does it mean?

Christian

You need to install the UDF 2.5 driver. Without it, its a certain crash or lockup. No computer will natively have the driver on it to work with the HD file system. The player apps that come with the drive emulate a driver to allow the drive to work, but don't actually install a driver on your system.

It's amazing that Sony and the Blu-Ray consortium are still so far out on bringing this basic tech to a standard usable level. You buy a drive and we just kinda expect them to work nowdays. That's just not the case.

Im not sure why Microsoft hasn't stuck the driver in an update. It must be a rights or copy protection issue. Obviously, without the driver you can't view the disc contents.

Toshiba released the driver in 2006, look here for a download link and info for installing on an x64 machine:

BSOD is a driver problem. Always is. The problem here is probably that Vegas interacts with your driver in a way that the Cyberlink software doesn't and this exposes a problem in the driver that the other software does not. Without knowing the driver and what the software does with it, it is impossible to know. The problem is, it's in the driver, not in the software using the driver.

As you probably know, XP64 has terrible driver support, and that is not going to change any time soon. There is no reason for anyone to upgrade their XP64 drivers given the minuscule market size.

Go look for UDF drivers for XP, if you are lucky there might be a better one out there. I wouldn't hold my breath however. I am afraid that your best bet is going to be to upgrade to Vista64 (if you want to stay 64 bit) which is probably going to be a more pleasant experience than XP64 all around once you have tweaked Vista just a little. The reason is that most of the Blu-Ray drives out there probably use the same UDF driver on XP64, which means that this problem is likely to manifest it self with any and all Blu-Ray drives on XP64.

Or a hardware problem.

Good point. Driver or HW. Unlikely the drive though, since it is peripheral. Most BSODs are memory related or driver related. HD problems tend to manifest them selves in different ways (and with lots of problems before the BSOD) and external drive problems tend to manifest them selves as non-readable media.

Obviously "tend to" is critical here.

Jeff,

Thanks a zillion for your very clear and logical explanation. I'm still wondering how MS really can lag that far behind...

So - the question still remains, where do I find a proper driver for this drive AND XP x64? I was not able to locate such a file via the link you kindy included. This subject has possibly been discussed before for XP, but how about XP x64? Would the Vista64 driver work, or is there a (Toshiba) driver that works with XP x64? LG mentions that this drive IS XP x64 compatible - but obviously not without a suitable UDF driver? Wy is not LG providing one? How can this be so complicated?

Your kind help is really appreciated, highly, as usual :)

If you can't find it using google etc, you probably won't find it at all. Since XP64 for all intents and purposes is dead, I would not be surprised if there never is one developed. Sorry if that is bad news. Obviously you should keep an eye on Google, but...

Terje,

Thanks, even bad new is better than no news...

IF a UDF driver is not available for XP x64 (and for this drive), then that is an obvious reason to switch to Vista 64 bit??!! Or is it?

I have been reluctant to switch to Vista (out of experience - not just feelings) on my video editing PC, because XP x64 is runing so smoothly with SCS software. Assuming that SCS will only support the upcoming Vegas 64 bit (when?) on Vista 64 bit, that is porbably the way to go... :(

So, does anyone run Vista 64 bit, Sony Vegas Pro AND this Blu-ray burner successfully together??? Are you able to author Blue-ray discs directly from VP and DVDA? If I get an positive answer, then I will switch immediately....

Hi,

A question for you Vista 64 bit users:

Does it support Blu-ray drives natively (UDF support)?

Are you able to burn directly from VP or DVDA to the blu-ray burner?

I had to contact LG and talk with one of their engineers to get a compatible driver for my system. I don't think it was due to Vista 64 but due to the MOBO I have as it is a dual socket running 8 cores.

Hello Christian, honestly, I do not know. But since I am such a nice guy and I need to burn a couple of Blu-Rays on Thursday, I will move my LG drive from my XP box to my Vista 64 box and give it a whirl. Hang tight and I'll tell you how it went.

I expect it to work fine though, Vista 64 comes with UDF 2.x drivers.

Hi Terje!

You surely are a nice guy, independent of what you do with your Blu-ray burner ;) However, I appreciate what you offered to test - highly. Again, my only reason to switch to Vista 64 bit is - for now - that this burner does not work natively with SCS products (within XP x64).

Im' currently on XP x64. Is it possible to upgrade (or downgrade...**grin**) to Vista 64 bit direclty without formatting the C drive and installing everything from scratch? I read something about this in your blog, about an installer that works on 64 bit OS... I hate the idea of spenging several days to get back up and running after an OS switch,re-installing all applications...

Hello Christian,

Sorry my test of the LG under Vista 64 was delayed a little due to other stuff needing to be done. Anyway, I see you are moving to Vista 64 now, and you will find that the LG burner works fine on Vista 64 and DVDA 5. You probably already have I guess.

Yes the LG H20L Bluray Burner works fine with Vista 64Bit, been burning several Blurays with Vegas 8 and DVDA 5 , No bad burns or glitches whatsoever...I even updated my Specs just last week to a P5Q Pro Asus Motherboard as well as a Q9550 Quadcore with Vista Ultimate 64Bit and my LG Bluray burner works perfectly with this setup as well...
