Why is Vegas further letterboxing my videos?

Normally, when I capture video, it fills the whole screen,. as it should. However, when I capture videos of a letterboxed source (black bars at the top and bottom), Vegas then adds black bars to the left and right of the video as well.

So far as I can tell, it's not covering up the video, but shrinking it down to add the black border. Why is it doing this? Howcome it just doesn't treat the black bars at the top and bottom as part of the video? Thanks.

check ypour property settings, make sure they are 4:3 not widescreen

file,properties, video tab, i think.

also, check the matte setting in the event pan/crop. be sure you've got 16:9 selected. Vegas still defaults to 4:3
