Thanks folks, especially for your examples. I guess I will play some more. But I do value your opinions which is why I asked for those examples. Bullet points rock!

Serena made me lol when she said "$200 doesn't buy a lot of a programmer's time. "

After more than a decade working for the company that will soon be giving you Windows Vista, I quit in the recent past for brighter prospects with a new tech company. The maker of Windows Vista will have invested at least $10 billion writing Vista code before it is released. You will be able to upgrade to Vista from Windows XP for $99 to $249 for the primo version. Sony's revenues are $63 billion, Microsoft's are $44 billion. So their economies of scale on not so different.... though the products are. Vista is a major disappointment by the way. I'm just pointing out the humor in the irony of what $200 can buy you in programming time.

And that costs $149.00, so...

>>>>$200 doesn't buy a lot of a programmer's time. It's the cost of a couple of restaurant outings<<<<

In New York that's not even enough for one dinner for two, if you are talking about a really good restaurant.

Come round my neighborhood, near Restaurant Row on West 46th Street, a great meal with wine for about, well, $149. Hmm.

Of course the wife & I do it for about $60-$70 but I have an editing system to feed.

I can top all you New Yorkers with a couple Tokyo restaraunts near me. How 'bout $600 for dinner for two with 4 glasses of wine. Or $149 in monthly electricity bills in a small apartment.

None the less, $199 to upgrade from Vegas 4 to v5 bought a lot more than v6 to v7... My upgrade to v7 is still priced at $234.99! No mail yet.

Peter, the email isn't important. The offer is on the site (or so everyone is saying). I paid the $234 (being impatient) and asked for a refund (which I got).

You don't need an e-mail for the discount. I gave you the link in this very thread.

Yes yes, I got the link and see it in the KB too. $149. But why not have it on the "My Software" page under upgrades too? That still shows $234.95, even when I go through to the Checkout. Seems hokey to me.

Anyway, I am undecided about upgrading. I'll wait until my v7 trial expires to see how much I miss it. The good news is that I have found some things I like in v7.

Sony must have borrowed code from the guy who gave us the free .m2t scene splitter. V7 actually has scene detection when capturing HDV. Vegas capture with scene detection is a great step forward for Vegas. I completely abandoned Cineform when they tried to charge me $99 for a sketchy upgrade just months after I purchased the previous version. I am completely Cineform free now and don't miss it at all.

Pretty much nobody needs Cineform beyond the few targeted specialists now that powerful dual-core CPU's cost so little. You can buy a super dual-core CPU for less than the cost of owning Cineform and keeping pace with their upgrade costs over two years.

Is the upgrade just a download or is it Box copy of the actual product? I asked because I prefer having a box copy of all my software.

It's whatever you choose. On the upgrade pricing page, the packaged version is $149.95 while the download version is $134.95.
