Why use the Trimmer ??

I'm a newbue so pardon the dumb question.

Editing my first file I captured a 10 minute clip onto the time line... a series of scenes...

I was using the S "Split" key to split the 10 minutes up into the various scenes...

Then someone suggested the possibility of using the Trimmer. (Thanks for the suggestion too guys!) And, it looks just as they said, a simple matter of preference but...

Does anyone think there is an advantage to one way over the other?

Since I am new, I hate to start off with a bad habit :)

will - just wondering what other resources you've found on the trimmer? i've just started to use it and have found it really useful. i posted how i'm currently using it in the thread link above.
