Why Vegas 5 can view file that Vegas 6 can't?

clearvu wrote on 5/27/2005, 4:22 PM
I've got an AVI file created in Imaginate. I'm using that software because Vegas 6 seems to be having problems with creating a montage.

Anyhow, the "preview on external monitor" works fine in Vegas 5 using the AVI file, but does not work in Vegas 6. Keep in mind that Vegas 6's preview works with most files, but for some reason, not THIS one.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas 6, but it did not help.

What might the problem be??

reinstall Imaginate (or the codec) after vegas 6 , though you dont say what kind of avi file you are using specifically .... what codec are you using ?

Vegas 6 also will not allow external view of avi files from SteadyHand image stabilization software. Vegas 4 and 5 did just fine.

Thus far, no response from Sony...

So, if you, kentwolf, have noticed the same problem, at least I know it's not a hardware issue on MY end.

I just can't understand how Sony can step backwards with a version that's supposed to be a step forward.

I can't get any video from files created with a Pinnacle Pro-One. Now, I am glad I am not the only one.

can anyone post small samples of these files that vegas 6 will not read ... i will see if i can find a simple solution in the meantime - before another update ..

just a meg or two samples is fine and from what source they are..

I'm sure someone will be glad to post an example (I haven't installed Vegas 6 yet due to this issue), but a temporary workaround is discussed in this thread. Just apply any filter to the video, and decrease the filter strength to zero.
B_JM wrote on 5/27/2005, 8:24 PM
yes -- good idea , though i meant avi files that will not load into vegas period from Imaginate, etc ..

The original poster seems to be able to load the file, but it just won't play in external monitor.

Here's an example of a file that is viewable through the external monitor in Vegas 5, but NOT Vegas 6.

http://www.torontoclearview.com/Saunderson.AVI

Keep in mind that although it's only 10 seconds long, it's 40 meg.

I downloaded the Saunderson clip, but couldn't try it out since my system is PAL. However, a few minuts later, I happened to experience exactly the same problem for myself. A DV file exported from Bryce, that plays fine in Vegas 5, will not show on the external monitor in Vegas 6. If you add anything to the clip that forces recompression it will work, but the raw clip just doesn't show on the external monitor.

Richard, I stumbled on this for Steady Hand about 2 weeks back now. I had it repro-ed by Chienworks and he sent it off to Sony for their attention. So "early days", I guess, in their repro cycle - yeah? AND it was just on the cusp, as it turned out, of the release of the now fab V6b. Maybe you might want to email them a sample and your comments too?

I'm sure it will get addressed sooner rather than later. It all works in V5 and I can still do this to 2nd Monior. Just seems very weird that this is not in V6. However - BIG however . . V6b is just amazing!

Hi Grazie. You are an old hand at Vegas 6 compared with me. The upgrades only arrived in Singapore less than 2 weeks ago, and I installed mine just last week. Because of my field order problem, I couldn't really start using 6 until this weekend.

Yes I'm sure Sony will get this fixed, but it's a pity their tech support are not more communicative. Never did reply to me about the field order thingy.

Anyway, to end on a positive note, I noticed something brilliant about 6 that I haven't seen mentioned before. When I preview clips from the Media Manager, I get realtime output to external monitor at full frame rate and Best resolution. Works with mpg and wmv clips that normally play around12fps, Preview quality, from the timeline. Means I can test final output on a TV more easily now.

RICHARD! You Star-Man!

I guess "others" know this already, but . .simply amazing! I just did some tests TRYING to see if this was so. You are SPOT-on!

Summary, same MPEG2 + ExtMon:

V5 - Preview Full - Explorer = YES
V5 - Best Full - Explorer = V5 Crash NO!

V6 - Preview Full - Explorer OR MM = YES
V6 - Best Full - Explorer OR MM= YES . . full unhindered 25fps

Thanks Richard . .very high note indeed . .

. . and DON'T forget Media Manager now!

PLUS: I was wanting to find an MPEG to work on - I knew just the first few letters of the file; did the quick text search and up it came! Total ease now . . .

Hey RIchard,

Forgive me for asking, but I'm trying to clearly understand your statement of, "I noticed something brilliant about 6 that I haven't seen mentioned before. When I preview clips from the Media Manager, I get realtime output to external monitor at full frame rate and Best resolution. Works with mpg and wmv clips that normally play around12fps, Preview quality, from the timeline. Means I can test final output on a TV more easily now."

From what I can tell, if I have an mpg file that plays full fps via media manager, it will play at same full fps any way I look at it.

Perhaps I'm not understanding your statement?

clearvu, if you have Vegas5 installed, try MPEG BEST FULL Preview in that! It will become obvious.

. . . Vegas6? Simply very clever!

Looking forward to trying that out when I get home, Grazie. Another reason to love the Media Manager that I hadn't discovered yet.
