Why won't an .avi play in Vegas?

I have a client who sent me some .avi's to put together, but Vegas will only read the audio. For video, it says "Stream attributes could not be determined."

What causes this? The files play fine in Media Player. Is there some way to correct this? A converter out there or something?

Thanks in advance.

This file uses what video codec?

I couldn't figure that out. The .avi was awfully small (1 min. 16 sec. = 10MB). I converted it using Stoik's free converter and it is usabel in Vegas now.

You might need the motion jpeg codec:

I needed this in order for Vegas to see the video in the avi files from my Canon still camera.
