why won't my rendered files play in other peoples computers?

I make home movies and burn them and send them to friends and relatives. I have been doing this for years with no problems. suddenly every disk I send out will not play in their players. Doesnt seem to matter if it's mpeg 1 or 2, wheather it's video cd or dvd or anything. and the problems seem to vary from error messages of missing software components to missing codecs, to speed of the file being to slow (whatever that means). anyone ever run into something like this?

Hi Jill,
Something must have changed. Have this worked at all since you upgraded to 3.c (that's what you have, isn't it?)? Check your line of production to see what changes has been made, and also: tell the DVD folks here what settings you are using. They'll know what's wrong, I'm sure.

What did you install just prior to the problem occurring? Did you install any hardware? Did you install software? Did you upgrade your operating system?
We need to know in order to possibly help.

TorS and john, thank you both so much for adressing my issue. I seriously don't remembering installing or changing anything prior to the issue occuring. That is what has be so baffled. the only thing that I know is constantly changing is that I have my computer set to to auto updates on my windows xp. could this have cause the problem in some odd way? I am using vegas 3.0. yes, you are right TorS, I was using 3.0c for a minute there but uninstalled it and went back to 3.0. but that should really have so little to do wtih anything since some of the files that are not playing in others terminals are older files from way back when I only had the basic video factory. The files have not changed only the burn is new.

What are you using to burn them? It's possible that they are getting re-encoded.

Did you do a firmware update by any chance on your burner just prior to having problems

Hi Jill
How long ago did you start having problems days weeks? I would definitly turn off auto updates at lest have it prompt you to install them and not automatically install them. It may have intalled the Media Player 9 codec and it might possibly be related to that. The reason I asked how long ago it was since you started having problems is that you could as a last resort use system restore to a date prior to when you started having problems. One thing that is cool about system restore is that if you decide to go back to your most recent settings (before you did a system restore) you go back to the most recent date. When you run system restore you can click on the calander and see what those automatic check points were created for .ie
Security updates or something like that. Now remember I would do this as a last resort I have had good luck with system restore but I wouldn'y say it is perfect either. Also do you have problems playing the DVD's on your DVD settop player? If so you can check them out before sending them out to family after any changes you make. Hope this helps some.

As of Winsows XP SP1, the Indeo Codec has been removed. Do a google search on "Indeo Codec XP"
