Will a faster PC help?

I edit everything in MPEG2 because I have a Sony MicroMV camera. I currently edit on a P4 1.4 Ghz with 768Mb memory and 2 hard drives, one is dedicated to video. My OS is XP Professional. I can't achieve 25fps playback from the timeline even with a simple video with audio and no effects at all. I usually get around 15 fps. This makes doing fine cuts really difficult. Doing a dynamic RAM preview seems to make no difference. If I buy a new P4 3.06Ghz will I be able to get 25fps or is my 'problem' related to MPEG2 editing?

Thanks.

Most likely it's the mpeg-2 editing. Are you capturing all I-Frames? I have a p3-667 and can get 29.97 FPS playback on my video with no effects (on draft though). Try capturing all i-frames and post back.

This would indicate that something else is a bottleneck. Are your project properties set for 29.97 fps? I can't imagine your source files affecting the frame rate of a dynamic RAM preview, since the footage is rendered to RAM. I used to have a system that didn't work with dynamic RAM preview at all. But how much RAM have you allocated for the dynamic RAM preview?

As a troubleshooting step you could try rendering to DV and then bring that file back to the timeline and play it. you should definitely get 29.97 fps.

I gave up on editing MPEG a long time ago. Way too many odd problems. Thankfully, now I have all DV sources. But when I did have to deal with MPEG source media, the first thing I did was render it to avi, and edit that. It solved every problem except the render time.

thehappyfriar: Am I capturing all i-frames? I don't know, Movieshaker isn't all that sophisticated (lol) so it doesn't have any options to set. I just keep what it captures for me. How would I find out?

Thanks Cheeshole. Because I live in Australia and we use (the superior) (gr)PAL format all of my projects are set to 25fps. I have 184Mb allocated to dynamic RAM preview. I'll try the DV route and post back. Thanks.

Thanks Cheesehole, but how do I render to DV?
