Will dot net 2.0 break V6 and plug-ins?

BrianStanding wrote on 9/12/2006, 4:55 AM
I started to install the V7 demo, and cancelled when it asked to download Dot Net 2.0.

I seem to recall when I installed a new hard drive that Dot Net 2.0 was incompatible with Vegas 6.0 and with many of the Vegas plug-ins and scripts. I also seem to recall that rolling back Dot Net to 1.1 was a major PITA.

Can someone who is braver than I confirm whether their Vegas 6.0 and Vegas scripts still work after installing the Dot Net 2.0 upgrade?

Thanks.

Pretty certain I've upgraded at least one machine to dot Net 2.0 and nothing broke.
There was an issue with V5 scripts not working with V6, maybe that's what you're thinking of?

i have .net 2. I installed it a while ago (hoping i wouldn't need 1.1 too) & i just re-installed with with Visual Studio .net 2005 Express.

no problems. Run scripts just fine.

Great! Thanks for the info!

Now I can play without fear!

2.0 does not update 1.1. After the download 1.1 and 2.0 will be on your machine. That is why there is no impact.

If the .NET 2.0 installation fails, it can corrupt your .NET 1.1, after which Vegas 6 won't run. This happened to me. I was able to workaround it by restoring my system partition with Acronis, then using a more careful procedure to install .NET.

It is highly unlikely this will happen to you, but not impossible. Before installing .NET and Vegas 7, I recommend doing a backup using Acronis or some other backup program. If not, then as a minimum you should fire up XP's System Restore and create a restore point.

Also I recommend turning off your anti virus programs (from the services panel) and maybe even shutting down programs that use .NET (like ATI video control panel that appears in the System Tray).

Thanks, Jayster for the wisdom of your rather painful experience.

I'll start playing with V7after I have the time to back everything up and do it right.

Just to clarify - Windows XP 64-bit edition is not a supported operating system for Vegas 7.

Jayster's difficult experience installing .NET 2 on it is not reflective of the experience on Windows XP.

I didn't realize that Vegas is "not supported" on x64. That's regretful, because Vegas 6 (also not supported) is rock solid on x64, and gets significant performance improvements.

From the tech support perspective, I can understand why Sony wouldn't want to officially support x64. This OS is a lot more difficult to work with for the inexperienced user, because 32-bit drivers don't run on it. That eliminates (for example) using Sound Forge, which has a 32-bit driver.

My own experience with Vegas 6 on x64 has been awesome. I shall run this Vegas 7 trial on x64 and hopefully will get similar results. If it doesn't work out, I shall either stay with Vegas 6 or switch back to 32-bit XP.

Perhaps in later versions, official 64 bit support will be a reality with Vista growing on the market.

Is there any way to tell what version of .net you are running?

I just installed Vegas 7 and it didn't say anything about .net 2.0. Does that mean I already have it? (I don't remember installing it).
Vegas 7 seems to run OK...is that proof that I must have it installed already?

Control Pane > ADD/Remove programs

See if you can recognise/note it there?

I seem to remember a wee program that told me .. eh? Gone . .. .

You should also note that .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 aren't always cross compatible. You're more likely to have BOTH versions installed on your computer, as some programs demand one OR the other. If you go over to RyanVM's MSFN website you'll find a download for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 with the SP1 pre-installed, and also a download for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 with the latest hotfix pre-installed. You might have better luck installing those, since the updates are included. I hope that helps.

Thanks guys. Grazie's suggestion worked; I see I have both 1.1 and 2.0 installed. So no worries!

"Just to clarify - Windows XP 64-bit edition is not a supported operating system for Vegas 7."

Why isn't this stated on the website under known issues....hmmmmm
