Will not render lower field first w Sony AVC MP4

ShaneJ wrote on 1/26/2012, 9:45 PM
I am unable to render anything in Sony AVC MP4 in lower field first. All other settings will render fine, progressive and upper field, but not lower. Whenever I try to render in lower field first I get an error. It tells me invalid argument or something. Why is that? How can I fix this and render lower field with the Sony AVC MP4 format? Please help.

What version of Vegas are you using? There were a few funnies in V 11 with NewBlue titler initially. Are you using the latest updates for everything?

I was using Version 9 of Vegas in the other thread and selected on the render pane:
Type: Sony AVC
Template: default

I am using PAL DV and it gave me LFF, Custom frame size (set to 720x576 and unchangeable) and 25 fps. I can manually change the field order to UFF or progressive.

Version 10 of Vegas behaves similarly.

Version 11 has a revamped pane with no "default" template. The field order is fixed at UFF.

I'm using Vegas 11 with the latest update of build 521.

What render type and template?

Are you PAL or NTSC?

I am now able to set PAL parameters, but I cannot change the field order from UFF.

Unless someone else has a workaround, I suggest that you use either UFF, or MPEG-2 PS with LFF.

I reproduced the error in Vegas Pro 11-521, but UFF and LFF works in Vegas Pro 9.0e and 10.0e.

I used the Memory Stick SD NTSC widescreen - 6256 Kbps to customize.

Shane, John,

Have you attempted rendering to a pre-set LFF template without altering any settings? I'm wondering if this is the problem I'm having because I've been attempting to render LFF MP4s. I can complete a render if I use a system preset template for LFF, but if I change one thing in the settings it won't render. And this is with Sony AVC. MC renders OK.

@atom12

Are you using Vegas Pro version 11? Have you tried an earlier version?

Which template has LFF?

Peter,
I am now using V11/521. The Sony AVC Templates are ones I created in V10 for delivery of SD spots to TV stations, of course all wanting LLF. After installing V11, I can now only render LFF Sony AVC in already existing templates in both 10 and 11. If a station asks for a bit rate that is different from the saved template I have to use Main Concept. Any change I make to a Sony AVC LFF template will produce the "unknown codec" error on attempting a render. (Not exact wording but not at my systemnow)
This is one of the ways (and there are only a few - but there should be NONE) that the V11 install "broke" some functionality in V10. Before, I could open the SD template I had created, change bit rates to any station's specs and render.

Shane, Peter, atom12,

Here are photos of the steps that I took and the results that I got.

Vegas 10.0e template

Vegas 10.0e result

Vegas 11-511 template

Vegas 11-511 result

Summary: Rendering as described does not work in Vegas Pro 11-511 or 11-521. Either the code is broken or someone at SCS decided that users should not be rendering LFF under those conditions. The first two photos show that it did work in Vegas Pro 10.0e.

Has anyone filed a bug report?

I have not filed a report but will tomorrow. It easily repeatable on my system, and I know I'm getting a slightly different error message than you did. I find it even stranger in my case that I CAN render in V11 if I don't alter any settings (maybe just opening the custom settings is doing something - I'll try that tomorrow too) but if I make one change to the template, nada.
I certainly hope they haven't decided that we shouldn't be rendering LFF in these conditions. MP4 into QT Pro is the way I've been getting several stations what they need.
