will slower burn speeds curb hang ups?

~hi all,

just curious, will using slower burn speeds (even though quicker ones are available) help reduce "hang ups" or "freezes" (at playback) at all? also does the number of chapter markers have any bearing on this?

I can only speak from my own experience.

If I let the DVD burn at the max rate that the burner and DVDA will support, I can expect a 2 to 5% return from customers. I burn at a slightly slower burn speed and my returns drop to almost nothing.

It's not scientific, but I don't like handling returns.

I've seen both bitrate and burn speeds affect DVD Playback. Regarding the burn speeds, many factors can come into play. Some factors:

-computer optimization
-computer activity during the burn
-burner being used (firmware updated?)
-discs being used (type/brand)
-combination of your discs and your burner
-burning software
-DVD Player(s) used to watch the burned DVD

Do you happen to have a DVD that you burned at a fast speed, and also burned more than ~3.5gb? Take a look at the burned surface (not the outer most edge where nothing was burned) -- is it a uniform color from center to outer edge? or do you see rings at certain points in the burned surface? Those rings can be caused by a change in burn speed (during the original burn). Sometimes where it changes burn speed, you might get a "glitch" during playback (also depends on the factors above...).

This subject has come up many times before. As always, the answer is to use DVD Speed (a free software program) to do tests with your own media and DVD burner to see what quality you get at different burn speeds.
