Win 7 can't play D.A. Blu-Ray discs?

Hi gang,

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this? Or is it just my gear...

I've been burning Blu-Rays with DVD A 5.0, and testing them on a PS3. No problem.

Today, I thought I'd skip the PS3 test and just check it on the PC that burned it.

No dice. Windows Media Player reports:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD. The disc was created in a manner that the Player does not support."

It shows the correct amount used on the disc, but also shows that same amount as the max capacity of the disc. The PS3 plays the disc as per normal.

Anyone come across this before?

Cheers,
Jason

My guess is that the auto-launch, when you put the disc in your drive, is launching Media Player, which is looking for a DVD rather than a BluRay disc.

I don't know that Media Player has BluRay playback capabilities -- but it's likely your computer has BluRay player software on it. (Assuming your drive was installed at the factory. If not, you were probably given player software along with the drive and you need to install it.)

Once you find your BluRay player software, you can set it up (rather than Media Player) as your default disc player software, since it will likely play DVDs and BluRay.

Hi Steve,

I just assumed Media Player could play BluRay! Never even crossed my mind it might not. I'll have a dig around and will report back what I find.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Steve,

You are right. Here's a 2009 post from a Microsoft rep stating Win 7 and media Player do not support BluRay playback because of licensing issues.

Such a simple reason!

Thanks!
