Actually it is Windiws 8.1 RT.

I updated my notebook which uses an external monitor. Windows 8.1 cannot seem to remember my settings to only use my external monitor. It keeps reverting back to using both.

As for improvements, YAWN!!!

One should wait for the service pack.

To late for me :((

Upgraded my Win 8, No internet working, well randomly at best. Found a few CMD fixes and after reboot it works fine for about 5 mins then fails again.

But the real killer, Vegas 12 714 in Windows 7 plays back the project im working on now fine. 6 x nested cams of 1080p Cineform files with CC at media level and project level. Plays fine on Best Full.
But,
On Windows 8.1 any CC brings it back to 15-20 fps.
Same machine, both OS on separate SSD drives.

Win 7 for a while longer for me it seems......

I don't use Windows 8 but I had to install Windows 8.1 to test that our VASST plug-ins still work with Vegas Pro on Windows 8.1. All I can say is... what a horrible user experience:

Windows 8.1 literally took hours to install (I wasted my whole day yesterday) and it kept rebooting and showing me black screens where I didn't know what was happening. Windows 8.1 is supposedly a free update to Windows 8.0 because it's only a few tweaks but your Windows 8.0 license key cannot be used to install it from disc!!! What's up with that??? Then it forced me to logon with my hotmail email account with no option to just create an off-line account and it sent me an email with a code that I had to enter to gain access to the PC I just built. This is incredibly intrusive because I don't want my test PC associated with my personal account. It never set my time zone or asked me about it so the time was PDT when I'm in EDT, but the most annoying thing is that it keeps popping up suggestions on how to swipe which covered 1/4 of my screen and I couldn't get rid of them because I can't swipe because all I have is a mouse! Nothing would make these overlays go away. I finally figured out that if I change my screen resolution, they would go away until they popped up again! The default desktop in Windows 8.1 is a horrible bright orange instead of the nice blue of Windows 8.0 and when you go to change it, the alternative desktop background images are even worse. None of the Windows 8.0 backgrounds are available. Maybe the new backgrounds look good on a tablet but on a 24" desktop monitor they are all screaming bright colors that hurt your eyes. (or maybe Microsoft is oversaturating them to make them look brighter on their tablet because their tablet displays pale in comparison to the iPad) ;-)

I guess most people updating from Windows 8.0 won't have these problems but the "new user" experience of Windows 8.1 leaves a lot to be desired. Funny, while I was searching for how to tweak things like booting directly to the desktop, (which, BTW, should have been an installation option since Microsoft knows full well that all of it's corporate customers need this capability right out of the box) I came across an article about how Windows 8.1 users are spending most of their time search the internet for ways to disable all of the "features" that Microsoft added. All I could do was laugh. What a mess. The only good thing is the Start button is back (but not the start menu). You need to right-click on it to do anything useful but at least it's something (albeit still a giant step backwards from Windows 7).

Too bad Microsoft didn't just recall Windows 8 and go back to 7. I predict that Windows 7 is going to be like XP... 10 years from now people will still be running it. lol

" All I can say is... what a horrible user experience:"

That's what happens when a bunch of 20+ year olds design an OS User Interface and believe that everyone want's their PC to look like a Smart Phone. Win8 was a monumental leap BACKWARD in usability and intuitive look and feel. In a word, Win8 .... SUCKS.

I'm still able to run an XP machine. I throw it the odd bit coal from time to time . . .

XP here, too. Up 24/7 with my web server, Old Faithful. I'll continue to use it until there is some application that I simply can't live without that insists on W7. Don't think that's gonna happen any time soon. Sort of fun being a contrarian, as long as there's not much downside, and I don't see much downside.

I guess I'm the loaner that loves Windows 8 :) I use it everyday and love it, would never go back to older versions. I upgraded to 8.1 as well, no issues at all works like a charm.

+1 Pete, I, too love W8 and the 8.1 update has been smooth as silk on 3 different machines, I do sympathize with those who are having problems, though.

Add me to the list of Windows 8.1 fans. It's got real snappy performance!

And I especially like that you can bypass Metro completely at bootup by selecting the option to boot directly to the Desktop.

The number or respondents who failed to read the first response to, or the link in the first post, seems well . . . rather remarkable.
Carry on.

That's because "modern" news media sells headlines, not content. Darn that modern news media, always so deceptive!

running 8 at home and it seems perfectly fine.... AFTER I added in the free Iobit START BUTTON program. Works nearly identical to Win7 for me now. No problem.

I just plain hate it. Metro doesn't span across multiple monitors and it is sooooo in your face.
IT IS LIKE TYPING EVERYTHING IN CAPS AND BOLD.
It isn't any faster and when it comes to multiple GPUs under VP12 it just doesn't work; only one will be utilized for acceleration.

I installed it on a second partition so I can play with it again, I installed it last year but removed it after a week and now again with the 8.1 update. There is also no "Recent Items" button and many more items that are essential to "power users" are hidden so deep inside that productivity just suffers. There are also too many background tasks going on like the MS Store that all need to be disabled; I like to have control over all the tasks my computer is running.
It will take me a week to get it setup to my liking and lots of 3rd party software; that is not a leap forward.
I hope Win9 will be better after MS has come to their senses.

You know that 8.1 has settings to bypass Metrro completely, right?

Another proponent of Windows 8, which is fast and reliable on two of my machines, and supposedly more secure than previous versions, especially Vista and XP.

Not sure how it stacks up against BOB and ME, though... ;>)

Hi wwjd:

Hey do you have a link for the START BUTTON program?

When I do a search I get all the other links about the start menu problems.

Thanks,
Bill

Lenovo's Sweetlabs adds a Start Menu application
for Win 8.0 from the Pokki App Store. Read link below from a Tom's Hardware article.

I love it. Configurable: skips metro, stops the corner activation stuff, shutdown button, you get menu AND recently used links, just like the old style. Free. Been using for 6 months or so and see no downside about it.

I love Win 8 (8.1). I am however using Win 8 Pro. I boot straight to desktop and use Classic Shell.

http://www.classicshell.net/

I also use Win 7 professionally and find little difference between the two when Metro is bypassed. (Been doing that since Win 8)

8.1 still needs the classic start button and Classic Shell has been a perfect performer in that regard.

I do think the update to 8.1 was ridiculously long (several hours). It was something like 3 Gb. ?!?!?! Really? Why? I don't think 8 was anywhere near that big.

Probably to include all the extra ways Microsoft have found to spy on the user, report back home and twist the user's arm into using a Microsoft Account....

That one bit my uncle. He recently bought a new laptop with Win 8 installed. After the long arduous process of getting Microsoft's own Office Pro 2013 installed, he then discovered that it wanted him to log on with his Microsoft account before he could use the software. This is something he was reticent to do for two reasons. First was his objection about how he would access his files should he be in a situation with no internet access, and second was that he doesn't have and has no desire to ever have a Microsoft account.

If he can't get satisfactory answers he'll end up switching to Libre Office, and also teaching all his adult education students that instead of Microsoft's products.

Nobody complains about having to have an Apple account to use iStuff, why complain about MS?

I did myself a HUGE favor!!!!!!!

Before I upgraded to Windows 8 I made two clones on my Windows 7 boot. So now after playing around with all of the headaches of Window 8 and then 8.1 I am now HAPPILY back to using Windows 7.

The fact that it was trying to run some kind of Xbox stuff when I was wanting to view my mpeg file was all I could stand. And there was no way to click a little 'x' to close that annoying thing! There was a lot more but that was the straw that broke the camels back!

Thank goodness for full (Cloned) system backups!

In other words, I pulled Windows 8 from my system!

Because Microsoft aren't Apple. Windows used to leave the user mainly in control, Apple never did. Microsoft are literally killing themselves to become Apple. To borrow from Star Trek It's like wanting to assimilate with the Borg.
