Windows 7 Video

I'm building a new Windows 7 system from scratch through NewEgg. I come from a computer background and know what I'm looking for in terms of cpu, case, chipset, cooling, motherboard and disk drives. What I don't know is what would be a good video and audio configuration for Vegas. There's a mind boggling number of video boards with different types and numbers of interfaces. Does anyone have recommendations/thoughts?

Vegas doesn't really give a darn about the video card. A $5 video card from the used parts bin at the local computer far is more than sufficient for Vegas. However, i would recommend that you get a dual-head card so you can connect two monitors. That gives you a lot more space to work in.

Some plugins may use GPU acceleration on the video card. You'll have to consult the documentation for those plugins to find what they want. Vegas doesn't really get involved in that aspect at all.

Lots of other folks have much better recommendations for audio hardware. I'll let them chip in on that.

I'm using an ATI Radeon 4870. It's dual head with 1GB of video memory. It's a FAST card and the dual head is absolutely brillaint. Works flawlessly, and the extra space is fantastic...I use one as an external monitor at times...sometimes I just put palettes on it. It's a great way to work.

Eventually, when SONY updates the video for Vegas and we're not dealing with the rather antiquated video rendering system, it'll make more of a difference, but for now I can vouch for the 4870 (I'm actually using a Saphhire card with the ATI 4870 chipset). And as a bonus it plays games at great frame rates too. :-)

Vegas may not use the graphics card, but the incredibly good Sony .mxf and Bluff Titler do. Get a really good graphics card and eventually Vegas will grow into it (I hope).
