Windows 7RC & 64-bit Vegas?

What exactly do I need to do to take advantage (if any) of Windows 7RC 64-bit OS? I currently have Vegas 8c. Is there a special 64 bit version I need to download?

EDIT: I just noticed version 8.1 on the download page. It says it has support for 64bit OS (vista only?). I'm downloading now. I'm assuming it will work fine with W7. What should I expect by way of improved performance?

I wouldn't recommend you to install 8.1, it works well for a few things but it's full of bugs. Half the times you open it and it tries to load the last project it will show you an error saying it can't find the source files even though you haven't moved them at all, and you have to close it and re-open it and then open the project manually. Then if you set a pre-render module that with a different frame dimension to that of your project (such as half the size to render faster for quick previews), the first time you use that module it will change the project dimensions to those of the module.

Finally, if you open a file in the trimmer and you start navigating through it back and forth to find something, many times it will crash. Sometimes it's useful only to render a project that you worked in 8.0c, but beware if it's a long project, because when you open the 8.0c project in 8.1, it rebuilds the peaks for all the files, which can take quite a while.

In other words, 8.1 is an alpha version, and Vegas 9.0a 64 bit is a beta, it works slightly better but it's far from being a release version.

I've already seen some quirks. I opened a 8c project which contained a deshaked event with two tracks. It couldn't find the audio track even though it's fine in 8c.

Is there a performance boost in rendering? I'm just testing it out now on my old system and will be building a new i7 system next week. I'm sure I'll see a major boost just from the new hardware and if 8.1 is as buggy as you say, I should pass and think about an upgrade to 9.

With the trend towards 64 bit systems in full force, I don't see why the 64 bit versions are taking a back seat.

Have been running Windows 7 x64 RC1 since the release day of the Beta and I am stunned how Microsoft managed to 1) improve such a mature product as Windows 2) make it even better as XP 3) release a socalled "Beta" which runs as rock stable as a 5 year old product.... and 4) have the Full Monty of regular automatic updates etc. to back it up.
Many software companies could learn from this fine work.

As to render times 32 Bit/64 Bit they are dependant on from/to which media, but in my setup from AVCHD to MPEG-2 the render times are more or less the same.

I use, however, the 32 bit version of Vegas 9.0a as some plugins are not yet fully converted to 64-bit.
But I have the 64 Bit version installed too, as this, of course, will become a part of our future.

Here the Vegas 9.0a 32 bit version works great with significantly improved render- and preview times compared to 8.0c - that is: if I apply the "2 GB Hack" (search it) ... and if I do not work with texts :-) Until that is solved I run my main load on good old V 8.0c (also with 2 GB Hack).

As to the open 8.0c projects in 9.0a I have stopped it since 9.0 does not seem to like 8.0c at all - quite what one could expect as the change from 32 bit data structures to 64 bit structures always give the most unexpected and surprising problems (i.e. word boundaries) - and also seem to stress the compilers.

agree entirely with ritsmer,

btw,

'Here the Vegas 9.0a 32 bit version works great with significantly improved render- and preview times compared to 8.0c - that is: if I apply the "2 GB Hack"'

i'm still running normally, ie, no hack as yet (32bit on 64bit win7). what happened BEFORE you used b3t's hack?

was the difference THAT noticeable?

if so, cff, here i come....

i'm currently using RC7 with 8.1 and it crashes regularly when using the trimmer. so i'll be installing 32bit 8pro and see how that goes.

Yes, it WAS :-))

With my setup (AVCHD + stills to MPEG-2) I could add max a few minutes media to the timeline - then it became unpredictably unstable (i.e. "reds" and worse)
With the hack I can add much more media and still enjoy a stable editor.
More or less the same behaviour for V8 and V9 here with /without that hack.

ritsmer, thanks for the post. I searched both google and this forum for "2 GB Hack" and got no results. Do you have a link? I'm guessing "b3t" = blink3times but still I get nothing....
