Windows ME & the 4GB filesize limit

MetaData wrote on 8/22/2001, 9:17 AM
Good-day, everyone;

I just upgraded to VF2.0, and I understood that VF2.0 will transparently create caputre file larger than 4GB on Windows ME/98/98SE, etc.

However, the capture utility always stops at 4GB. Am I mistaken beliving VF2.0 removed the limit? Or is this a configuration issue?

My system specs:

MicronPC 1GHz Athlon AMD
40GB harddrive
512MB RAM
nVidia GeForce2 MX w/32MB video RAM w/latest drivers
Hauppauge PCI/TV TV/Turner card w/latest drivers

There is really no way to remove the 4 GB limit since it is a limitation of the FAT32 file system used by Windows and not a limitation of VF per say. The workaround (which VF 2 implements) is to create a multi-segmented file.

A multi-segmented "file" is a video that is split into mutiple 4 GB files (or segements), each segment has a link to the next segment. When using a multi-segment compatible playback program (like Vidcap/Print-To-Tape), the file will seamlessly playback as if it were one huge file. Incidently, you can playback any of the segments independently in the Windows Media Player.

So, VF does not create a giant > 4 GB file, yet it still can capture and playback project greater than 4 GB.

Hope this helps.

The situation that you have described could also occure if you were using the previous verison of Video Capture and not the one that is now contained within the application. I would just click on the video capture icon in VF 2 and try to capture with that.

Does the new version of Video Capture create segmented files when capturing from an analog source? It did not seem to when I tried it, I just got an error message when the file size reached 4G.

avi files only.

Yes, I know it produces AVI files. But It still doesn't automatically
create segmented files. Is there a setting I should check?

Thanx,

I was capturing from an analog source (Hauppauge WinTV) to an AVI file (using the Hufyuv codec), and the new version of Video Capture stopped capturing with an error message when the file size reached 4G on a FAT32 partition.

Is this a bug? Does the automatic file segmenting only work for DV capture? Or am I doing something wrong?
