Windows Update Strikes Again

A Windows Update dated 3/15/17 hammered my system overnight. It causes File Explorer, and anything that relies on it for File Open or File Save As, etc., to crash. Uninstalled the update and all is well. Went online and found out how to make installation of updates a manual process, hopefully it won't reinstall itself. Grrrr....

My PC updated as I shut it down last night, I will have to check this, thanks.

Somehow mine (Windows 10) lost the security tab in everything and will not let me open an abundance of files because there are no permissions anymore.

Thankfully, I have Windows Update disabled.

All good here -- that I can tell anyway ;-)

I have Windows Update disabled as well, I'ts the only way to be sure. If I really want an update I can enable Updates but with the Microsoft policy of bundling updates I'm at the point of not updating at all.

My update auto installed last night, booted up today and had the issue, looked for any updates, there was one. I installed it and that fixed the problem. I guess they were able to find the problem, fix it and create the new update. 😀

Mine is still broken so I will go back to Windows 7. Windows 10 tells me that it cannot restore after it goes through the entire procedure. Checking on line at the Microsoft sites there is a problem with poorly written 3rd party software that damages Win 10 files concerning error oxc000142 and missing security tabs. I sure do love to install Windows once every three months. This is not my Movie computer but the one I use online.

windows 7 working well here. tried 10 twice... no like......and obviously I know eventually have to go there.....but smooth sailing so far, staying put as long as I can....on all computers until this internet laptop dies and have to buy a new one that comes with 10.....hopefully that happens before the edit systems have to go there..

I have Windows Update disabled too, but only because I have to stay on Windows 10 version 1511, which was the last version that Media Manager runs correctly on.

ritsmer wrote on 3/16/2017, 2:02 AM

It is a never ending and very sad story: after the last "update" my machine refuses to shut down - it just continues running.

So now I have to switch off the machine by the power button...

CogDiv wrote on 3/16/2017, 9:14 AM

Apparently when you allow Microsoft to update the Windows Updater, your settings get changed to Automatic.

Kit-As-Was wrote on 3/16/2017, 4:24 PM

For Windows 10 O&O ShutUp10 restores the option to switch off automatic updates as well as control how much data Microsoft collects. For Windows 7 the Windows Update Service can be disabled via Services. Given Microsoft's track record it is better to be safe than sorry.
