I'm attempting to run Vegas 3c via Windows XP remote desktop from another Windows XP desktop...Vegas spits out an Exception and locks-up whenever I hit "play" remotely...Any ideas as to why this might happen? All other apps function normally and both computers are otherwise healthy.
Ok...I'll help myself here, then...I figured out that if "play sound from remote computer" is turned on in the romote connection options, Vegas crashes. If it's off, Vegas works OK...
This limitation, of course, renders the remote use of Vegas from my laptop sort of useless for audio...
I am thinking about setting up a remote office and was wondering if anyone is experiencing a problem with using the remote desktop feature found in win XP pro. Please advise as I am about to purchase a laptop soon to do this with. Thanks!
I would recommend you use a KVM to switch a single keyboard/display with your laptop and whatever other machine you are using rather than use the remote desktop feature. That is what I use in my case and it works great.
Just think about what you are asking to happen... every screen change / every audio element that is going on on your laptop will need to be intercepted by the remote desktop software and transferred over to your other workstation. That just seems to me (IMHO) to be asking for trouble.
[EDIT].... although I do see that you are talking about setting up a "remote office" so I guess you are not going to be able to have a KVM to switch things here. Oh well... in any case... using any kind of remote control software (such as the remote desktop feature of XP) to do video editing on another machine is probably quite frankly wishful thinking. But,,, if you do get it working... let us know.
There. I said it. There's no way you're going to have enough network bandwith to do anything useful with Vegas remotely. You have to bring your media over to a local disk and work from that.
Sorry, but it's better to put it out of it's misery.
Thanks for the fast reply. I've found a friend who is going to let me borrow their laptop to try it before purchasing one for myself. I'm not planning on transferring any files to the laptop. The only information being sent to the laptop through the network is the sound and video that would be coming from my existing computer. Here is an excerpt from microsoft's website:
"Remote Desktop works well even over low–bandwidth Internet connections, because only the keyboard input, mouse input, and display output data are transmitted over the network to your remote location. On a high–speed network, you’ll enjoy exceptional performance."
I guess I'll find out shortly whether or not it is true.
