Wintv 885 Capture won't open in Movie Studio 9.0b

Hi,
I get the "Hauppage Wintv 885 Video Capture could not be opened' error when trying to capture video in vegas movie studio 9.0b. It says to make sure it is turned on and not in use. I have no other programs running that would use it and I made sure to kill any processes that I thought would use it (wintv related) and services (media center and hauppage related). I would capture with Wintv but it seems to be temperamental, dropping the audio occasionally. The 885 is essentially the same as the 880, only with a remote. I am running Windows 7 x64, specs in profile.
Is it possible to use Vegas to capture from this device? It is a hardware MPEG encoder if that helps.
I always hated that it was a crapshoot as to whether the device you were buying would work with your favorite video editing program.

I'm pretty sure, though not absolutely positive, that Vegas' VidCap will only capture AVI files from 3rd party cards. If that card isn't capable of delivering a stream that can be encoded in AVI then VidCap won't be able to use it.

Try this for kicks ... create a very short test video, can be a still image or generated media, doesn't matter. Click Render As (advanced render) to AVI to get the render settings window. Look through the available templates and note the codecs available. Also choose Default/Uncompressed and click the Custom button to get a list of external codecs available.

Now, armed with this list, go into the WinTV application and find the settings menu. See if you can set the card to capture AVI in one of the codecs you have in your list. Set it to that, then exit WinTV. The card *MIGHT* now be set to that codec instead of MPEG, and VidCap *MIGHT* be able to see it.

The old Hauppauge WinTV card i had a decade ago worked fine this way.

Well, there don't appear to be any options for changing the capture format, apart from auto converting it from a .ts to a .mpeg after capture. By the way, Movie studio says 885, but the card is actually an hvr-1850.

Are you trying to capture live TV, video in from the S-Video/composite plus audio inputs, or a show that has already been recorded to the PC?
