WMV 9 superb encoding Quality!

Downloaded the beta windows media encoder 9 yesterday and used it to encode a dv footage produced by VV3. With the VBR "file archive" 75 quality settings (de-interlace option on), the output quality is amazing and the file size is as small as an MPEG1 VCD file!(14 mins for 143MB)I couldn't believe my eyes.
Anybody here has tried it yet?

I would like to burn the wmv 9 file for a friend but unfortunately he has a really slow computer and i don't think he would be able to see it without bringing his system down. Besides, he doesn't have an internet connection so he can't download the new windows media player 9 beta (I can't copy what I downloaded because MS doesn't allow to redistribute this beta version)...I wonder if the SDK can distributed into CD...anybody knows?

I've only played with this a little but it looks to me like the
new released Quicktime MPEG-4 gives similar (for video at least) results to the
current MS beta.

Do you have to do anything special for VV3 to recognize this once you download it?

After installing the encoder and the player, in the "render as" wmv at the video tab you should see the 8.1 codec (which is 9). the only difference is that it doesn't support VBR encoding (not the same as two pass. VBR files are compatible only with player 9 beta but 8.1/9 cbr files can be back compatible with player 6.4, older players.

there was thread on this at creativecow.net VV3 forum at:

I don't know about that...but i think you need to buy quicktime pro 4 to be able to encode files, windows encoder 9 is free ;)

What worries me is it's beta and it very clearly warns you the only way to uninstall it is with WinXP's System Restore. I'd hate to have to resort to SR when the release version comes out.
