.wmv render jungle :-(

7 minute prez - rendered out to .wmv - pretty much default settings - turns out 265 megs looks great plays well on WinMediaPlayer 9.0
Make a few changes and render it 3 Mbps this time turns out 156 megs looks worse and lags upon playing in same player.

Obviosly I have not made notations as to precise settings in each case - anyone have clues

Big difference between the default and the 3Mbps template. The Default template is Variable Bit-rate and keeps the same frame-rate and size of video as the original. The 3Mbps template drops the frame size down to 640x480 and the pixel aspect to 1.0 and changes the frame rate to 30fps. So you'll definitely see a big change between the two.

What are you trying to do here? How do you need to view this video? The answers to those will give you (and us) a better clue as to which template/bit-rate settings to suggest,

the 3Mbps template may be playing worse (lags) because it is constant bit-rate rather than variable.

It will help also if you take notes as to exactly what things you altered in the templates ("pretty much default" and "make a few changes" leaves a lot of unanswered details... you know... the Devil IS in the details).
