wmv.,rm.,VCD burning problems

I have updated all drivers in my computer;video card Matrox 550,SB Live 5.1,Win XP
Pro,Intel 850 mb P4,1gig pc800,video raid card IWILL 100 w/2 IBM 80GB.
I can burn mpeg-1 vcds, no problem, but when it comes to anything else multimedia in
640x480 it ends up displaying an error seconds after it starts playing(wmv8)or
plagued by artifacts (real media p).Don't know what else to do.
Has anyone experienced this? Would appreciate the help. Thanks!
P.S.-have also updated & re-installed all players.

Are you using the standard templates? If so, sometimes you have to adjust them a bit for best quality. I haven't used Real Media (And don't plan to based on comments from this site), but as far as .wmv files go if you use the base 256kbps template and edit it to adjust the quality to 100% and two pass encoding, you will come out with a high quality video for the file size. Thanks to Cheinworks for this tip.

HeeHee...thanks for the tip, but how can I make those changes? There are only those presets. 512,1,3. at 320x240. My work is 720x480.
I'm trying to get a wmv.VCD at 640x480 res. to play on a pc full screen or at this point any format where I could at least fit 25 min. worth of video on a cd. at a higher res.than offered by mpeg-1 of 320x240. Or is there a way around mpeg-1 to encode at 640x480? Thanks again. Vic.

There are very precise requirements for a VCD, and one of them is that it must be MPEG-1 at 352x240 resolution. You can't make a VCD with any other settings.

If, however, you just want to have your video on a CD and don't care about being VCD compatible for playing in DVD players, then WMV works nicely. Once you've chosen a preset, click the [Custom] button. From here you'll have tabs to select parameters for audio, video, bitrate, and summary. In the video tab you may chose resolution settings. While you're here, you should also slide the quality fader to maximum (all the way to the right) and enable 2 pass encoding.
