WMV to Vegas to AVI?

Got a file in the WMV format on Friday and need to burn it from the CD it's on to a DVD. I use DVD Workshop for authoring and burning. DVDWS won't import the WMV file -- doesn't recognize the format.

I brought the WMV file into Vegas without difficulty, but when I attempt to render it as an AVI file so I can import it into DVDWS the render crashes after over an hour and only 5% completion. I've tried this twice, with the same results.

Any suggestions?

How large is your WMV file?

I've imported and rendered WMV's in Vegas to AVI without any problem, and most of my WMV's are 30-70MB.

Does it give you any error message, or just freeze up your PC or what?

File is only about 15 minutes long.

No error message. Just total freeze up, followed by the computer re-bootint itself and then an error message saying that Windows experienced a serious problem and has had to re-boot.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a defective hard drive on the secondary buss with the burner as primary.

Not sure what happened, but when I rendered it a second time it completed the render o.k. Took about 3.5 hours for the 15 minute file, but it burned to DVD without any problems.

Thanks for your input.
