won't render out of virt. memory

My system has 512 DIR Scram Memory...and I can use up 1552 on my setting...but I still am running out of virtual memory during the rendering process.....and then the system seems to lock...even though my computer says it is trying to get more memory assigned...many hours later still nothing....
other than buying more memory....any suggestions?

This might sound like a dumb-assed answer, but I remember reading somewhere that "Out of virtual memory" usually means that you have insufficient room on your hard drive to do whatever you are trying to do. Just a thought.
