Workaround to "needs compress" bug

DVDA has a bug where it tells you that it needs to recompress an MPEG-2 file that has been rendered from Vegas and is perfectly compliant. You will also get this erroneous readout (in the Optimize DVD menu) with VOB files and other similar content.

Now, it is of course possible that you have a file that really DOES need to be re-rendered. However, DVDA often tells you it will recompress when no such action is necessary. In this case, it is a bug.

The workaround?

Fortunately, it is simple. Save the project. Close DVDA. Re-open DVDA. Open the project you just saved, and then go back to the "Optimize DVD" dialog. In most cases, the yellow marks have been replaced by green check marks, indicating that no recompression is necessary.

I just thought I'd post this so everyone knows and can avoid many unnecessary hours of recompression and video degradation.

Heh. I just tried this files that actually do need to be recompress, but I want to avoid it anyhow. (A few of them have odd resolutions.) I created the DAR, checked Optimize DVD to see which ones DVDA would want to recompress, and then I used DVD Patcher to "fix" the problem ones.

No matter how many times I saved, closed, and re-opened the project, though, DVDA still wanted to recompress. Then I remembered this post, actually closed and re-opened DVDA itself, and bingo...checkmarks all the way.

Now to see if the DVD actually turns out okay.

Thanks, John!
