I'm working on a project that will strictly be viewed on 4:3 TVs. What settings do I need to check to make sure that the final version I see on the TV looks identical to what I'm seeing in the Video Preview window?
Never ever show it on a television. All televisions will show a slightly different image, some brighter, some darker, some will block larger safe area margins, some less. Some will show the image taller, some shorter, others with various types and amounts of distortion. Colors will vary all over the lot.
In other words, it's probably a hopeless cause.
Can you be more specific about exactly what it is you want to remain identical?
Sorry...I didn't necessarily mean coloring. I know all TVs will translate color and contrast a little differently from each other. I guess I just want to be sure that my video preview window in Vegas is showing in 4:3. I don't want something to be chopped-off when it gets shown on a TV...only to find out that my preview window was stuck in some other aspect ration.
Vegas defaults to standard 4:3 (actually 4.133333x3) to match standard TV. Choose any appropriate non-widescreen preset and you'll be fine.
However, you do need to keep the safe areas in mind. Some TVs will chop of up to 10% of the image around the edges, some less. If you have anything important that must be seen keep it away from the edges of the frame.
