WOT: is 9 million fps fast enough for you?

I came across an article titled Using Lasers, UCLA Develops Fastest Camera Ever that talks about how this is being accomplished.
All I can say is WOW!!
And for the conspiracy theorists here, it was funded by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Department of Defense's central research and development organization).

NO!
And to quote the article "the world's fastest continuously running camera". Cordin's camera achieve at least 200 million fps, probably more but such things are a bit hush hush. Of course they only record a few frames at that speed!
The problem is how do you store or analyse the data.
Not to take anything away from what's been achieved just that high speed recording has been a bit of an issue for me of late. It's difficult to explain to some people all the issues involved in getting footage of things going boom.

My first thought is that it can record a high-speed camera (a mere 10,000 fps) in action so we can see how it functions before making the leap to such astronomical speeds. . . it requires 910 MB per second ... from what I've heard, not sure if it was in the article...
I don't think USB 2 or Firewire will work LOL. . .

Here in the states, they have a series on the Discovery channel called "Time Warp" that does some fun things with speed changing although I think the best they can do is about 10,000 fps. They have had some very interesting imaging on the show (like how a hummingbird holds it head still while hovering at a flower - used x-rays and radio opaque syrup for them. Found they oscillated their crop out of phase with the wings to stabilize themselves). I would love to have a camera that did even 5k fps (wife would kill me though).

You can get a 5Kfps camera for around $10K, only 2GB of memory so you're not going to capture many seconds of action though.

The kicker is that the amount of light you need goes up as the fps goes up. I've spoken with one gent who runs a test facility that uses 500KW of lighting. Stopping your subject bursting into flames is an issue.

Not if you own a Fire Extinguiser i trust.

Having a fire extinguisher at the ready right next to the camera is not exactly reassuring for the subject!

Given the choice between "we'll put you out as soon as you catch on fire", and "you won't catch fire", i don't think i would ever choose the former.
