Good for you on the new efficient house. I didn't know a heat pump system would work in your northern lattitude. Heat pumps are getting really efficient (as mandated by law), I bet yours is a 18 SEER unit. Do you know? Does your house have 2X6 exterior framing (for more insulation)?.

I got a 14 SEER unit last year and it is just amazing how much better and more efficient it is than our old worn out 10 SEER unit was.

Fortunately for me, here in Virgnia Beach, VA, it's a very mild climate. It's 65F here today, no snow at all this year yet. Because of that, there is slightly less homeowner awareness in this area of energy efficiencies that those to the north and south are aware of. People here get internal blind windows instead of efficient ones.

Jeff9329, I live just outside of Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit MI so we do get cold winters (currently -7 C. / 19 F.)
The house I'm living in was built about 16 years ago (very wel linsulated) and the choice at that time was a propane or forced air electric furnace.
The builder decided to go with electric as he hated the idea of a propane tank.
The furnace came with a heat pump and I have to say that I was very surprised at how efficient it is.
I talk to neighbours with houses of comparable size who have a forced air gas furnace and my heating bills are the same or lesss than theirs.
I had new windows put in a few years ago and that helped a lot as well.
Our govenrment has a rating system for the energy efficiency of various brands of windows and mine were at the top of the list so, while they were more money, I feel that I did the right thing.

Jeff,

To be honest, I don't know all the specs on the heat pump. We do have 2 x 6 framing. They just finished insulating and sheeting the garage, and I am hoping that that boosts the efficiency even more. I don't, however, recommend a tornado to be the reason for starting over ;-)

I had a project in Detroit and at night we went to the very interesting bars in Windsor. What a lot of fun! Way too cold for me though. I bet nowdays it's a hassle crossing the border just to hit the Winsor stuff, ans vice-versa.

Sheri:

My sister in Jackson, TN went through a big tornado about a year ago. They were okay and the house got a major remodel and addition out of it. Unfortunately, some neighbors didn't make it. The big tornados which seem to be coming a little more often are really a bummer.

Let me guess. Places like Jason's & Cheetah's, right?

I bet nowdays it's a hassle crossing the border just to hit the Winsor stuff, ans vice-versa.

As long as you have proper ID, it's no hassle at all.
Due to the drinking age in Ontario being 19, we get a lot of Americans over (drinking age is 21) every weekend. It's what keeps most of the downtown bars in business.
My wife commutes to Detroit every day and having a passport makes it very easy for her.
We go there shopping and to concerts and museums periodically and, once again, no hassles.
