Here's a good one for all those who want to be PC all the time on this forum. Using the word dumb is OK, but using the word stupid is not. It will get you bleeped. See. Kinda funny.
I called my self st upid the other day and it was censored like that. When I read back the post, it honestly sounded like I was calling myself a sh**head instead. Bravo!
"Here's a good one for all those who want to be PC all the time on this forum. Using the word dumb is OK, but using the word **** is not. It will get you bleeped. See. Kinda funny."
Yes grasshopper, this is well known to us war-ravaged veterans. It is affectionately known around here as the "john_cline rule."
In the interest of forum protocol, please don't bother asking about it further, especially of John, but I will let you know that he was right. ;?)
Definiton: Foolish; slow at understanding: “a s t u p i d mistake"
Dumb:
Definition: Without the power of speech: “She was born deaf and dumb”
As I see it, being s t u p i d/ foolish, is something one can do on purpose.
Being dumb is officially an handicap/disadvantage.
Unless the word dumb is used for foolish.
Also s t u p i d is probably used more often as a curse word.
But yes I agree with you.
Especially when one talks about making an own mistake, or disagree about something we call the situation s t u p i d. When that gets censored it's quite odd looking.
A simple expression then actually turns into a curse word and gets more attention.
I too tried to say the s t u p i d word on here today and was surprised to actually see that it was censored lol. At least you're allowed to say heck lol.
Semantics are pretty funny sometimes. I have noticed for years that politicians and political commentators all accept that the word "liar" is an absolute no no. The word "spin" is used instead.
When i was running my own family-safe chatroom i had a pretty severe filter in place that caught most offensive words, including a huge variety of misspellings, alterations, symbol substitutions, etc. A few were offended by the filter, but the vast majority appreciated it. However, the one thing i did notice was that, at least among the savvy adults, having {censored} show up in the middle of the post did bring a LOT of attention. I toyed with having it simply drop the word rather than replace it, but that left people very confused when they stumbled over the missing word.
I did have one kid argue that using symbols in place of the letters in a bad word, for example @ for a and $ for s, that he shouldn't be filtered since he wasn't swearing. I had a long long talk with him about it and he eventually came to realize on his own that it wasn't the actual letters and symbols on the screen, but the intent and meaning he was putting forth that constituted the offense. He realized that even substituted, the word he wasn't saying was still really there for everyone to see. It was quite an impressive growth moment for him.
Of course that only amplified my feeling that showing {censored} on the screen was still swearing. The real solution is to educate people into the ethics and expectations of the venue.
Personally, I fail to see anything offensive or wrong with cussing. I mean, I'm not gonna go up to a group of old ladies and start swearing... and granted, it can sound tacky and make you look bad... and a little can go a long way.
...but the socially acceptable, un-offensive or technical terms for these words can often sound just as bad or even gross. You stump your toe, what do you say? Many would say the SH-word... but the technical term would be, "defecate!" or, "Feces!" ... Can you imagine yourself squealing those out in pain?
For what ever reason the F-word is considered the ultimate curse word... but wouldn't shouting it out be the exact equivalent of shouting, "Ah fornicate!"
What SHOULD be the ultimate cuss word is the word "Hell" or the H-E-double hockey sticks word (in case I get censored). It's widely considered to be a pretty watered-downed curse word... but it's a location... and regardless of your beliefs, it's a very very bad location. Isn't telling someone to go there way worse of a thing to do than shouting the F-word out when you bump your head?
I tell ya, political correctness sure is a real pain in the a-n-u-s! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go out and have a g-a-y ole' time!
When I lived in the UK many years ago, an expression often used was, Keep your pecker up! I wonder if that's censored. I guess so--the word was peck-ur. Grins. It does seem a bit silly.
"Gay marriage is now legal in all States in the US, according to a recent Supreme Court ruling."
The censor list on this forum is seriously out of touch with the times, and in at least this one case, is as offensive and inappropriate as the content it pretends to exclude. It would seem Sony's site policies don't apply to Sony.
