Would this work for previewing 5.1 audio?

I'm not trying for anything too fancy here. I'm just thinking of adding a sound of a projector to my silent short film (like a Charlie Chaplin film). This is sort of over the top, but that works in this short.
The thought was to have the projector sound in the rear two speakers only and the soundtrack, which is the rest of the audio, in the front 3 speakers. I don't have a 5.1 capable sound card, so I thought for a preview I'd just try to get the levels right by panning the projector to the left speaker and panning the soundtrack to the right. Once the levels seem ok, I'd just put the projector audio to the rear and the soundtrack to the front.
Would this work and give me anything close to an accurate preview of the final result?

Thanks for any help!
