Writing speed problem when Burn to DVD

When I try to burn to DVD, I get a warning box indicating:The drive couldn't determine the correct power for writing this disc. To solve this you need to use a different writing speed or a different brand of media.
Does this mean my DVD burner is too fast since I have a 12x DVD+/-/R/+/-/RW by MAD DOG multimedia Dominator? Or does this mean the DVDdisc +R 1-8x by Platinum I'm using is too fast? When I insert the DVD disc it automatically locks in a default speed of 2.0x and doesn't give me an option to change it. Then it rejects and ejects my disc without burning it. Then pops out the warning box as indicated above. What can I do to make this software work???
