There has been a number of problems with the HD-DVD drives, actually reading data, that has force MS to adjust software design issues. But to compete with PSP3 in the media market, they are force to look seriously at BRay..
the nintendo revolution could have a blue-ray add on too. So could my computer. Heck, MS could say the X-Box 360 will be able to drive your car.
But, most video came atachments are never produced because nobody really wants them. Sega basicly flopped with the SegaCD so nintendo dropped their plans. It's all "Sure, we may in the future".... And monkeys may have that script for hamlet tomorrow but I want a solid yes or no, not "maybe" .:)
Ok, heres my take. So MS will have the HD DVD as an add on tot he x360. When Sony releases the PS3, they will have BD built in. Not only does that mean HD movies but also HD games stored on BD unlike MS that uses DVD9. MS already anticipates the Sony marketing by saying "Look at the Xbox, you cant play BD content on it because it only supports HD DVD" So by MS possibly using BD as an addon as well, they have essentially taken away the majority of Son'y marketing especially since no one predicts Sony to adopt HD DVD as an addon. So the Xbox 360 not only has HD games, but will support both formats whereas Sony will only support their own format.
While I dont like addons and the over priced costs, at least X360 gives consumers a choice in which format they choose to support while not limiting them to one format. Like it or not, in Gates' quest for world domination, at least he is beginning to fight for consumer rights especially in regards to managed copies.
Who will win the war? Not the companies. Not the consumers. HD DVD and their camp wont win. BD and their camp wont win. The only winner I see in this war is the Studios because people will be forced to buy content twice (more if they owend DVDs and VHS copies.) Studios want BD to win to retain control. Consumers just want something that will play their content without being intrusive.
Sadly though, the gaming console wars will do more to decide the format winner more than a HD version of King Kong or Harry Potter. The longer it takes the PS3 to hit store shelves, the harder it will be for them to regain their footing in this new age of HD gaming.
no it won't. So far very few game companies even take advantage of the space aloted on a DVD (most PC games fit on a single CD & I don't belive there's ever been multi-DVD games in the past few years. Nintendo uses multi-disc but that's because those discs they use only hold ~1.5gb). I highly doubt the HDDVD/BD capabilities of any future consoles will be used for no more then movies, just like the origional Playstation basicly only used the extra CD space for cutscenes.
You're right about us not winning though. I don't plan on re-buying all my movies in the next 3-4 years just for HD. Maybe one or two, but not all. It sure would be nice of the video industry could agree on a standard for more then a few years at a time. I still can use my music CD's I bought in the mid 90's with no problems on any modern CD player. I'm lucky if I can find decent VCR's anymore & in a few years will have to go on e-bay to replace my DVD player. :)
