xdcam ex file giving error in quicktime

I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've rendered an HD file to the 24p xdcam ex template in Vegas 9c. Vegas sees it fine and VLC sees it fine but Quicktime is giving me an "has invalid data" error message and wont open the file.

I'm trying to get this to an FCP editor who is working with Sony xd cam ex files - he is getting the same error I'm getting.

I'm trying a new render with the save markers to file check box UN-checked just to see if that does anything. - and it didn't do anything - same error.

Any help or info much appreciated, thanks!

Yoyo, refer to this thread.

Thanks Jay, downloaded and installed the codec. Works great but the FCP editor is giving the codec the thumbs down. I also mentioned Cineform but he gave that the thumbs down as well, didn't want to mess with it. Looks like I'm just going to give him an h264 quicktime, he's in Boston and I'm in Oregon and file size is an issue.

I'm surprised that the XDcam EX files are not working in quicktime.

Thanks a bunch for the info!

The XDCamEX files DO work in quicktime. BUT they have to be in a .MOV container. Straight off the camera they are wrapped in an .MP4. We used to have to use Clipbrowser to wrap them in an MXF so Vegas would understand them. Vegas 9 now understands the native files. Similarly, the .MP4 out of the camera had to be wrapped to .MOV for the Mac folks to work with them. The newest FCP reads the native file as I understand it.

I work with Mac folks every month. I just wrapped a 4 month project working between Vegas and FCP on a short film. DNxHD was used by both of us, and it was absolutely seamless. I've been working with Mac and FCP users this way for 3 years now and it's always absolutely seamless. If this guy doesn't want to do it, it's his hangup, and nothing to do with the codec.

In fact I did this with a guy in Los Angeles and I am in FL. We traded on an external HD. He was prepping for the LA Film Festival.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Most of my FCP dealings are local stuff so i just render out as quicktime animation and put it on a USB hard drive. The files are huge but they work with anything and render out pretty fast. This Avid codec looks pretty sweet too, should come in handy but the files are a lot bigger than the xdcam ex files.

I'm rather shocked that Vegas can't render to a xdcam ex codec that quicktime can open. The codec works fine in Vegas (as I would expect) but I was stoked that I was giving this guy exactly what he asked for. Bummed that it would not open on my machine but figured he would have better luck. No dice.

When you say you traded on an external hard drive were you mailing it back and forth?

Thanks again for all the info!
