1) Which Avid HD system in particular?
At the Sydney roadshow Avid couldn't demo getting the footage into Liquid but could edit it. I now that sounds daft but obviously they got it ingested by means outside of Liquid.
Vegas Pro8 works with the Sony EX1 applet and ingested the footage perfectly and was the only system to get the metadata displayed on the timeline. Same CC tools that are in Vegas work with the EX1 footage. From the perspective of CC it'd be the same as CCing HDV although the EX1 having more dynamic range could obviously be pushed around more before it fell apart.

2) You mean could you get Vegas to use the mojo for I/O, don't believe so. Why would you want to? Might be a dumb question as I'm not terribly familiar with the mojo.

No, you cannot use the Mojo. Vegas cannot send the Avid-proprietary codec out the Firewire port.
As Bob mentioned, Vegas (currently) is the only app that works 100% with XDCAM EX and XDCAM.

Hi Bob I was thinking of Avid Xpress PRO HD 5.7 Im thinking of 4.2.2 colour space for color correction? And perhaps a knowledgeable general comparison of what you can and cant do? with these two.

Im thinking about real time editing its becoming a bit of a nuisance now to line the sound up. AND I wish I could edit real time without any workaround.

The more I think about it the better it is to have your colour correction on board while editing. Especially when your going for different looks.

OK Guess the mojo is not the answer for vegas real time editing. Thanks for the info.

From my largely uninformed seat of my pants testing the biggest impact with what you can do to an image CC wise goes back to how it was acquired, the more data the camera records the better but the cost of doing that goes up a lot.
Aside from that though internally Vegas works in 4:4:4, it doesn't get any better than that so your biggest limitation is what you've recorded and what you're outputting to. The CF codecs in Vegas are probably your best way to work if you're planning on heavy CCing.

I'd really suggest investing in a copy of the DV Rebels Guide. Stu lays down the law very nicely about how to edit, grade and time video. In a nutshell, editing and futzing with CC at the same time is a bad move. Trying to manage look in a one step process is also a really bad idea. OK, his book focusses on PPro and AE but the same workflow and concepts can be used in Vegas. Get the book, read it, twice, even if you never plan on shooting an action drama the final chapters on post are a gem no matter what NLE you use.
The thing I really like about this book and the author is he knows where to spend what little money he has for a project.

One of the most important steps in a production is locking down the edit. The point where you say 'that's it, editing finished, time to move onto the next stage'. Thing is if you're trying to do CC while your editing you're very likely to never get there. Firstly your bogging your NLE down but more to the point you're cluttering up your brain and that's the real killer. Editing is about timing, getting the flow right, just like a dance. You need to focus on the movement of the dancers, get that right first and then think about their costumes. You can't stay focussed on the visual flow if at the same time you're thinking about the look.

Of course this is all more applicable with longform projects, if you're talking things like music video or commercials then a very different way of working kicks in.

I guess what started me thinking was reading an earlier thread by serena

Where you can use the neo hd to maintain the 1920 1080 resolution in order to work in 4.2.2 with the new EX1 footage I guess Im just looking at what can be done to get the most out of this workflow. The neo hd codec isnt cheap and I think the avid includes something similar.

I really think it would be a great idea if Sony could offer something similar to the mojo even an independent company could make one that fits all? The thing is with CC is because it changes the mood it can also change timing. How I used to edit was to make the cuts before adding FX then add them to copied layer above then experiment once Im happy switch off the effects and render the footage uncompressed and then deinterlace in AE. Sometimes I will add my own CC or a look in AE sometimes add CC in Vegas depending on how highly I value what Im doing. But now you can CC in Vegas just as well. It would be nice to be able to edit real time with the FX added for convenience and speed. editing this trailer recently involved a lot of CC and sometimes with the CC added the thing wouldnt play at all and I had to render it out to be happy with the cuts and look.. Nightmare..

That trailer is sure a masterly piece of work and I'd suggest doing that kind of work is never easy regardless of what tools you use. That isn't traditional editing though, for the lack of a better term I'd call it motion grahics because multiple elements are interacting in the frame.
High end tools like the big Avid systems or the high end compositing tools make this much easier with hardware acceleration and/or background rendering of the elements. Even then it's very easy to overlook just how much time (and money) goes into production of these kinds of works even with the most expensive tools money can buy.

Wow thanks Bob The idea is to use it as a concept trailer :)

Its ongoing and what Im trying to do here is get it right then re-film the different bits to make it more professional... By doing it this way I can work out exactly what props I need and how far to go in building sets! It needs better models. I have an idea and tried to get concept artists to draw for me but it costs money. Ive had a go at building them but Im not good enough for this.

The idea is to send a copy in with the script to either potential investors or for someone else to make the film. I have refined the script even more now and Im really pleased with it. ITS A Cracker..

Taking on board what you have said regarding . I think Vegas is giving me everything I need here. Its just sometimes I feel like I have to get out and push..
