XML exporting problems

Hello,

First, sorry if my English isn't that great. I'm Dutch.

In order to work with different editors (I'm a director and I only make rough cuts) I've been using XML exports. At least, I've been trying: exporting XML in Vegas Pro 13 has given a lot of problems. Trying to export my project to XML without copying the used media is impossible. The progress will get to like 36% and then Vegas crashes. I've tried this on different computers: the same happens everywhere.

Letting Vegas copy the used media while exporting the XML has been a solution for a while, but not for long. Since last week exporting this way will get to like 84% progress and then stops, presenting a message that archiving has failed. The log shows this error:

Unexpected problem: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.

In the past, some of these errors have passed by and occassionaly occur:
'Codec for first video event in sequence not found.'
'Unexpected problem: System.InvalidOperationException: Sequence contains no matching element.'

Searching on Google, I've haven't been able to find a solution yet. I've seen someone else mentioning this problem in an other topic (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/Forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=905156), but there are still no real solutions there.

Am I the only one with this problem? If yes: what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the tip, but even searching the entire forum doesn't give a solution to this problem. Bottom line is the XML-export just doesn't work properly, at least in my case and it's very frustrating.

It works so much as designed to do what it does do. You cannot push it beyond that, as it will break very easily. It is likely that it cannot do what YOU want it to do.

Ok I really appreciate the fact that you reply, but this just seems a little too abstract to me. I might just not be the most technichal guy...I'm a director and I like to work with actors and telling a story, making cuts is part of that...but I've had different editors that tried to solve this problem and they all told me this software someway doesn't work the way it's supposed to when it comes to exporting XML.

If this is necessary to know: I only make very simple cuts. I even avoid transitions such as fades and I don't reverse shots for example. I only make very rough cuts, because very early on it became clear that even when I was able to export an XML it became problematic to import the timeline the right way into Final Cut or Premiere Pro when I tried those kind of techniques. So really...how can I possibly be trying to push any boundaries here? I'm cuttng a very very boring corporate film at the moment. It's only like 4 minutes long and the only thing I did is cutting the takes that I wanted to the music my client chose.

The footage I'm using is Apple Prores 422, 1920x1080. The editing process itself does NOT give any problems since I started using the function of creating video proxies.

So let me ask again: how can trying to export a simple edit such as this cause so much trouble. It's still very basic. It shouldn't be this hard, should it?

Have you tried the EDL? I have been able to run an EDL thru Avids EDL software and make it usable for other NLEs.

I've tried EDL. That exports fine, even takes just a few seconds to do it, while exporting XML takes suprisingly long. I remember using XML on my old macbook in FCP and it just took a few seconds. Unfortunately I don't own any Avid EDL software and I can't seem to find it, so I'm guessing this is part of the Media Composer? If not...could you tell me how to get it? As far as I know only Vegas can read this type of txt EDL. None of my editors were able to import it into either Final Cut or Adobe Premiere. In the meanwhile I'm also talking to the guys of AA translator, which supposedly can convert a .veg project file or a Sony EDL (txt) to the XML I want.

UPDATE: AA Translator works amazingly well, so this might offer a solution for about $60.

That said, I still feel like getting to the bottom of why it's not working in Vegas. I paid good money for it and it just seems weird that something so basic doesn't work the way it should.

I SOLVED the XML exporting "Archiving failed" problem on SONY VEGAS 13

first if you used a saved .veg project into your current project (timeline), remove it !

second, save your project and close the program.

third, open your new project, go to tools and click on "clean project media"

NOW you can export XML successful !

hope will help u..
