I haven't used 2k but I went from 98se to XP and it is really great! Especially if you tweak and optimize it for audio. Since everything is moving towards XP support, my suggestion is to go with it.

Go with XP. The driver support is going to be much better for any hardware you put in your machine, including the all important soundcard.

I've got XP on an 850 Athlon with no problems.
However, I did set it up for "Best performance" in the Windows parameters.
In other words, no fancy graphics or cute icons. It looks almost identical to Win98.
Like I tell people everytime this question comes up...Make sure your existing hardware is supported under XP.

Go with "Standard PC" if you have a soundcard with old technology, or consider that another expenditure...
