So how does Windows 2000 w/ SP3 compare to XP Pro? They seem the same except for the interface. I have read that XP wastes too many cpu cycles even when certain services are turned off. 2000 takes over your hard drive and is hard to remove. I still use 98se due to the lack of funding but was looking to upgrade after i receive my tax returns. Any input on real world problems of both would be appreciated.

I would switch from Win98SE to Win2K or WinXP for one BIG reason - NTFS! With 2K or XP, you can capture everything into one HUGE file instead of a bunch of little files. I find one big file easier to deal with than 5 smaller files. It also makes it easier to make a 4.3Gig DVD file (seeing that 98 is limited to 4Gig.) Personally, my 98SE machine was fairly stable. That machine now runs 2K and has Vegas open for WEEKS at a time (just shut off the monitor and DV Deck - leave the project open).

As for which is better between 2K and XP? Hard to say. Many people swear by 2K SP2 and suggest you don't get SP3 OR XP. Others swear by XP. I've used both and don't see much difference as related to Vegas.

I had 98 SE and went to ME what a disaster had to wipe everything and start over with 98SE the ME crashed all the time. With 98se I saw the blue screen of death a fair amount of the time. I moved to XP pro several months ago and have not had a crash since. I strongly recommend xp pro running any video application is very hard on any system adn xp seems the best to me.

Buy the OEM version (I know tigerdirect has it pretty cheap). They'll toss in a (worthless) CD cable because it has to be sold with "hardware" and you can get PRO (not an upgrade, but a whole install-from-scratch version) for about $160.
