xvid and vegas movie studio - problems

Howdy Folks,

I found a few threads on this, but I don't know that I came across a definitive answer. A friend sent me a video he shot on a pretty cheap video camcorder. It is, unfortunately, encoded with xvid. As I understand it Vegas Movie Studio 8 (which is what I have) does not like to party with xvid. I can import the audio, but not the video. I have tried changing the fourCC code to DivX with no effect. I also installed the latest xvid codec without success. Windows Movie Maker will import the video without a problem. I can export the video as wmv, but I am going from lossy to lossy without even editing anything yet.

Does anyone have a better solution? Thanks in advance.

You will have to export in Huffyuv, which is lossless. VMS just doesn't like XVID/DIVX. I would suggest you use Avidemux2 to export to Huffyuv, or if you want batch converting download WinFF and create from scratch a Huffyuv template (I can help you if you want, email me directly).

Premiere will support these files directly btw.

Hola Eugenia,

Thank you for pointing me toward Avidemux2. I will take a look at that and see if I can get a lossless copy of my movie. I also appreciate the offer of email help, but I will try to avoid bothering you if at all possible.

I really dig Vegas, but I am surprised that they have such poor support for xvid. I wonder why that is?

Not enough market research. Maybe also not enough engineers...

Thanks, Eugenia. I was able to convert the movie into Huffyuv, or however it is spelled, and do what I needed to do. I appreciate your help.
