Yellows

I really need some help on this one!

I'm working on a commercial for a customer who's logo is dominant yellow;

such as (R) 254 (G) 255 (B) 59.

Applying the Broadcast Colors filter severely alters the yellow to a near beige, destroying the color scheme of the branded logo.

Occassionally, I see yellows on broadcast TV in this bright color range. How do they do it?

Can someone recommend a method that will help me keep the look I want, while maintaining broadcast specs? I'd really appreciate some quick feedback.

Thanks everyone!

Well, I'd start by opening a vectorscope and then I'd use an HSL filter to lower the saturation until the yellows were in range. The result I see looks legal on the scope and still looks very yellow.

Your situation might require something slightly different. Maybe you'd apply the filter as MediaFX directly to the clip. And if the graphic is a bit more complex you might need to approach it differently, but it seems like generally dropping the saturation a little ought to preserve the relative colors while getting the values into range.

1- First you need to figure out if you want to work with studio RGB or computer RGB levels.

In 8-bit projects, it is probably better to work with studio RGB levels. I'll assume that. Make sure all your levels get converted to studio RGB levels. If you bring in JPGs or other still images, apply the color corrector "computer RGB to studio RGB" preset. DV files and SonyYUV files stay the same. HDV stays the same (don't apply the preset).

You'll need to convert the client's color to the studio RGB equivalent. Multiply by 219, then divide by 255, then add 16.

becomes
234 235 67

Their original color might actually be 255 255 59... Jpeg can't have red values that are 255, so that gets changed to 254.

2- 32-bit mode is confusing. It behaves differently. For simplicity's sake I do not explain that workflow.

3- If your project is intended for DVD, you can relax the broadcast safe colors to the lenient preset. (Actually you can let it go even more lenient than that... composite max can be 133 IRE.)
Make sure the studio RGB checkbox is checked.
