Yes! printable DVDs in nonsmear gloss white

I was going to put "OT" in front of the title but the darn software limits the title size.

I have stayed with adhesive labels on my DVDs for the past couple of years because I just didn't like the look of the typical matte-finish DVD-printable media that have been available to date.

Tonight I accidentally came across an announcement that Taiyo Yuden and Primera were introducing waterproof, smear-resistant, GLOSSY white media. CD media are currently available, with DVD-R blanks later this year. CDs are currently about $.80 each.

To me this is tremendous news. I won't have to put up with the extra hassles of labels much longer.

Yeah, I got an email from Primera stating the same. They added the glossy one to their catalog as they already had one that was matte.
Here is what was contained in the email:

Dear Friend of Primera:

First came Primera TuffCoat™ with AquaGuard™ surface. Now, we're excited to announce another new water-resistant inkjet printable media. It's called TuffCoat with WaterShield™ surface. What's the difference between these two incredible inkjet printable discs?

* AquaGuard has a bright, white surface that is matte finish. It has the highest degree of water, scratch and smear resistance.
* WaterShield has a more typical white surface but has an absolutely gorgeous glossy, photo-quality print surface. For an informative Flash presentation, click here www.primerastore.com.

TuffCoat with WaterShield is now available on our webstore at
http://www.primerastore.com/watershield_inkjet_cds.

It is also available through Primera's Authorized Resellers and Distributors. Check it out. You simply won't believe how stunning - and durable - your inkjet printed discs can be!

Best regards,

So I'm guessing you can print on these &, after it dries, dip them in water? :)

Looks like the glossy DVD's won't be out until August.

I wonder how they'll work with non-Primera printers and inks?

Doubtful. They said water "resistant" not waterproof. Probably means they only smear a little bit for whatever good that is.

What about the added gloss in the Epson R1800? Anybody use this?

Yup, and you can now play them in the shower, or outside in your swimming pool!

For me, the biggest attraction is the gloss finish, then the smear resistance. If I use my Epson pigment inks, then that would take care of fade resistance, though I guess if you're leaving your DVDs in a place where you have to worry about fading then the data side would be destroyed long before the printed side showed any problems.

hey, don't laugh. I shows off the Krylon coat by taking a sprayed disk & dipping it in water. :)

I'd like a glosy finish. that would look nice.

You ARE right Riredale. The glossy finish would really be worth it even if it won't go through the rinse cycle on my Maytag. I really never liked the way the Epson R300 looks even with optimized settings. Still looks "fake".
These disks should be really interesting.

As I read that article, it's implied that it will only work with the Primera as in: "All of Primera's inkjet-based disc duplication and printing equipment supports the new TuffCoat with WaterShield media..."

Looks like some kind of collaboration between the two companies. Anything less--anything not "supported"--will probably not work.

But, hey, it's a start!

Yes Jay, the email ad I got from Primera was a little vague on whether that statement implied that they work only with Primera duplicating equipment.

I've tried the Tuffcoat with Aquaguard, and they are definitely smear proof. They are very smooth but not glossy. The statement on the cannister is "Specifically designed for use with Primera inkjet systems". I'm using one of their printers, so I don't know how others would work.

I was more concerned that they may have tried to follow the trend of some duplicating systems which sell copy towers that will only work with their proprietary media. I don't think that's the case here.

I'd say other companies ink will probably work. I'm sure the 'magic' is in the way the disc surface absorbs the ink, and not which ink it is, to a degree.

Several of my suppliers told me these were coming some time ago. None of them made any mention of them being ink specific so my feeling is they should work with any dye based ink.
However I have noticed the ink used in the Bravia printers looks very different to standard Epson or Canon inks.
