Yet another Decklink Question

Hi,

I'm an Avid Xpress Pro user that finally got fed up with Avid the company. (Not to mention the buggy software :) )

I just got Vegas 6.0c and I am going through the Sony Seminars Vegas Training DVD to get up to speed on how to do things in Vegas.

I only edit HDV. I have the FX1, HC1 and the M10U deck.

I'm trying to determine what a decklink card would give me other than being able to monitor the video on my HD monitor.

For instance, it appears you can capture and print through it, but would I want to capture and print through it to the M10U deck or use firewire?

Would the decklink card off-load some of the work from the CPU for playback and monitoring? If it doesn't then I might just be better off setting my preview to a second monitor connected to my graphics card that would support the HDV resolution.

Thanks,

Jeron

I have a BMD Decklink card for SDI I/O. If you're solely working with HDV it'll serve you no purpose unless you want to PTT to say digibetacam. It's only SD but HDV looks pretty good converted to DB for broadcast.

So the HD Decklink card won't output HD to an external HD monitor?
Actually maybe my question should be, does Vegas support the HD Decklink cards?

It supports the card, but you can output to an HD monitor using windows secondary display in your preferences. Instead of choosing firewire you just choose the 2ndary display option and then you will have options to choose which monitor.

I've got 2 - 19" LCD Computer monitors connected to my video card via DVI. I was planning on using them both for the Vegas application.

I've set one of the LCDs to preview but they don't support a high enough resolution for HD, so it gets downscaled.

I've also got an HD Monitor on my desk. I'd like to use that plugged into an HD decklink card for video preview. I'm hoping the decklink would provide some video processing to free up the CPUs for Vegas to do other things as well.

If all the decklink does is allow the HD Monitor to connect to the computer via component cables and does no other video processing to free up the CPUs for other things, I'll just replace one of the LCDs with a CRT that can support the HD resolution.
