Yet another divx5 question

HeatMiser wrote on 11/24/2002, 10:30 PM
Despite all the questions previously asked/explanations offered regarding divx 5.02 issues, I have no difficulty at all working with divx 5.02-encoded files with the first 3.0 release of Vegas Video. However, that version has problems with reading/decoding Windows Media Video 8 files and lacks some other refinements that came with newer versions. So I find myself uninstalling/reinstalling/upgrading between 3.0 and 3.0c from project to project, and it's getting to be a drag.

Fellow users, any tips beyond what comes up in a search of the forums thus far?

Sonic Foundry representatives, any thoughts on the possibility of a patch that addresses divx? I know it's been asked many times already, and it's been stated that the problem lies with the codec, but the fact is that I can get Vegas Video to decode/preview divx 5.02 files without any problem if I am willing to downgrade to the first 3.0 release, so divx support seems to have got broken at some point. A fix (or some information) would be really really great.

Totally agree! I can't decode Divx AVI files and work with them in Vegas 3.0c!! What happened? I created these AVI files using the Divx codec in Vegas 3.0c, from DV capture, now can't edit them ...

Sonic Foundry - can you please bring back support for Divx decoding in Vegas 3.0

Heatmiser,

You mean you can both render to Divx 5.02 and also import those files back in to Vegas 3.0 for editing? I've never had a problem rendering to DivX, but I can't bring them back in. I'm not sure I tried this with the original 3.0 release. If so, I'm thinking about installing an un-patched 3.0 along side 3.0c (separate folder et.) to see if this works.

I've never tried rendering to Divx of any type; my particular situation is such that I need to import clips in a wide variety of formats and render to mpeg1 or mpeg2 (for VCDs, SVCDS and DVDs) or WMV (for streaming previews). The problem I have is a common one I believe, where the latest versions of Vegas have problems importing Divx 5 files and display black where video exists.

The side-by-side install is a good idea, and once I haven't tried - I have no idea if duplicate registry entries and such will play nice together, but it's worth a shot. The problem still remains, though, that no version of the program will allow me to work on a project that requires me to import both Divx5 and Windows Media 8. If the parallel installation works, I guess I'll just use 3.0 to open Divx clips and render them out to raw avi ahead of time, then import those back into 3.0c to continue the project.

This issue has come up before. Now, I cannot help but wonder whether there is some arm twisting by microsoft. i.e. some tacit pressure by the big brother to shut out antything that seems like competition.
