you guys awake yet?

Hey,
Just got an XH-A1 and captured fine on my desktop yesterday...I'm about to head out for a shoot, tried it on my laptop to capture live and not use tape since it will be over an hour long.
At some point I apparently hit "always do this" on the opening of the capture utility (after selecting standard def). Can anyone tell me how to switch to hi-def?
Thanks very much,
Randy

I haven't had to change this in a while, but I BELIEVE it's the following (anyone can correct me if I'm wrong): In Vegas, click Options, Preferences, Video tab, then "clear" the Use external video capture application check box. Then OK.

I did this once, and I think in order to get the "which one do you want to use" dialogue box back I had to do the "hold shift while clicking Preferences" thing and dig around in the internal preferences.

Edit: This is to get the "choice" dialogue back, so that it asks DV or HDV each time you click the capture icon...

The answer is ...

Options | Preferences Video Tab uncheck the use external capture

Yay CClub!!!
I had just enough time to read your post before I left for the shoot (no time to even say thanks) and thank goodness you were right!
Thanks everyone!

I shot this in 1080i and Win 7 (64) sees the file as .m2t AVCHD.
It shows .m2t in Vegas 8 project media also but if I right click and go to properties it shows mpeg 2 and 1440 x 1080 x 12.
My project properties template is set to HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.970 fps).
That said, I don't have my new monitor yet (to use as an external monitor) but just wanted to see what the footage looks like so I selected my main 24" display (which is set at the recommended 1920x1080) with "Windows Secondary Display" selected in prefs/preview device. In the "Display adaptor" drop down I have "1-1920x1080 (60)" selected and "automatic size setting" under display mode but get nothing (with the "preview on external monitor" button pushed).
If I set display mode to "use current settings" or "pick custom settings" (but there is no 1440x1080 setting) it does play but it's very pixelated.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,
Randy
BTW, I don't have a BluRay burner yet either so if I want to put this on DVD I have to downconvert it right? I'm not seeing how to do this in the help files...any advice here as well?

"Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?"

Just woke up down under :)

Your display is setup correctly. The camera captures to tape at 1440x1080 pixels at a PAR of 1.33 (I think) which means they are displayed at 1920x1080. The pixelation is probably because your preview monitor is not set at Best / Full.

To use the Windows Secondary Display you first have to setup your display driver.

Yessir Bob, I had it set to good...I should have thought of that for sure!
Any recommendations as to what the settings should be to render to DVD (using DVDA)?
Thanks very much,
Randy
BTW, I suppose I wrote "you guys awake yet?" because I myself was still half asleep when I wrote it and wasn't thinking about you guys on the other side of the world....silly me

"Any recommendations as to what the settings should be to render to DVD (using DVDA)?"

Assuming you're making an SD DVD:
1) Edit on HD T/L.
2) Select a de-interlace method in project properties, Interpolate seems to give the best results.
3) Render at Best to mpeg-2 using a widescreen template. The rest of the setting for encoding depend on how much material you need to fit onto the DVD. No shortage of info on that available through the Search I would think. If that doesn't get you an answer feel free to ask. Also look for posts on BitCalc from John Cline. I believe he's still hosting that for download. Very useful tool for calculating bitrates when encoding.
