Your Camera / Camcorder suggestions in 2023...

set wrote on 2/15/2023, 4:59 PM

If you want to upgrade or purchase new camera/camcorder in this year...

With budget max around $2000-$2500, what is your suggestions and why?

For lens-interchangeable camera system, I have been adapted to Sony e-mount system, so probably switching system may costs quite a lot especially in the lens system, and seems no other good choice for this other than Sony FX30, but any other recommendation?

If not 'attached' to Sony e-mount system, what is your suggestion?

For camcorder option... I've been thinking about Panasonic HC-X2000. Anyone using this camcorder? Love to hear your thought. Besides of Panasonic HC-X2000, what is your suggestion?

What's the goal for the camera upgrade?

Will it be used on single-operator shoots? What kind of rigging will it be used with? What about audio?

FX30 looks like a fine choice for APS-C Sony users (depending on what you're doing!)

Wolfgang S. wrote on 2/16/2023, 1:31 AM

It really depends.

I would think more about the upcoming Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II X.

Most important: the sensor size of the HC-X2000 is simply outdated, also the stabilisation, but the camcorder still has some clear advantages in handling. So it depends if you need that.

The sensor stabilization in the S5 II is great, all what you miss is the XLR section (that can be added) but also the ND-filters (it needs a good vario ND).

The X version is important - since it adds both v-log but also All-I shooting.

The color science if the S5II is superior, similar good to then the color science of Blackmagic. And it can be graded in Vegas in a great way.

Re camcorders ... a couple of months ago I was considering updating from my Sony FDR-AX100. The Panasonic HC-2000 was overall the most likely, but 4:2:2 was only .MOV media, and I want to avoid .MOV as much as possible because it's not had such a good wrap (pun intended) on the forum over the years. Thank you @Wolfgang S. for your comments on the HC-2000.

The Canon camcorder offerings were eliminated from consideration because, from memory, they had scant consideration for the 25/50 fps world.

Thus I abandoned the idea of upgrading to a new camcorder; however, I did buy a GoPro 11 Black with the battery handle.

I've often found specs on camera sensor sizes hard to decipher. The FDR-AX100 sensor size is 1" so to me that's easily understandable. When reading the HC-X2000 specs, I took it that the sensor size was 1.25". Silly me! It seems that the spec given actually means 1" divided by 1.25 = .4". That is ridiculously small - about the same size as my Panasonic 16:9 MiniDV camera from 20 years ago.

It seems that some camera manufacturers 'hide' the true dimension of the camera's sensor by using an obstruse dimension meant to confuse and requiring an arithmetic calculation rather than just honestly stating outright the true size of the sensor.

@Dexcon a side note. I've shot and edited Panasonic 10bit 4:2:2 UHD4k from Panasonic stuffed into a MOV with never an issue with Vegas. Camera is the Panasonic G9.

If I had to start fresh, it would be possibly the Panasonic S5II, but more than likely the GH6. I have invested in M43 lenses and would have to start over.

Well, my camera/camcorders are 1080p limited now (except DJI Osmo Pocket), and feel the need to upgrade at least to 4K/60p. Mostly single-operator, long record in 4K 30p, but if slow motion required, 60p is there or 120p also available.

Sometimes in event, 2 camera coverage, where one is camcorder (audio is in here, camcorder with XLR inputs), and 2nd is mirrorless interchangeable lens, and sometimes also connecting it through multicam system via HDMI or SDI is also a consideration - but I guess right now all cameras are capable for it - The challenge will be balancing all picture adjustments.

In one side, the 'simplicity' of camcorders is a most 'solution' where if event situation is 'not known' that camcorder (like my PXW-X70 now) is a simple unit almost capable to anything.

But realize also that with large-sensor mirrorless interchangeable cameras (although rarely changing lens), the creativity, dynamic range, etc. is overall better.

You are correct with HC-X2000, that's a 1/2.5" sensor, smaller than 1". Just found the option for 1" inch is the Panasonic HC-X20, and that's also +$1000 more.

I planned with FX30, until I found one of video review that said the sharpness of FX30 is 'not good', that makes me questioning again with the plan:

; although in later time before I reply this topic, I just found probably this could affected by 2 settings: Sharpness and Clarity : (don't have the unit in hand, so it's all hypothesis). Anyone here is a user of FX30? is the sharpness issue a big issue for you?

No viewfinder in FX30 / FX3 - so might need to be adapting to it.

The viewfinder option seems only from the A7 series, like my previously rented camera, A74 or A7s3 - and that's +$1000. Sony a6x00 series seems only 4K-30p limited and 8bit record if I'm not mistaken?

The Panasonic S5 II, - looks a huge jump from Panasonic. It's an L-mount right? The lenses investments and choices is in consideration... ( https://l-mount.com/en/lenses )

Alternatively options seems GH6 ? M43 lens investment is another consideration.

I planned with FX30, until I found one of video review that said the sharpness of FX30 is 'not good', that makes me questioning again with the plan:

I question that- the 4K footage I have watched looks great. The Sony APC cameras I have are (too) sharp and I can't imagine why this would be different. I keep detail on -7 to minimize sharpening in camera, too.

This reviewer is comparing the cameras using a third-party lens wide open with autofocus on- to determine camera sharpness I'd at least focus manually.

Here is a more carefully done test and the FX30 looks on par with the FX6 but with less moire.

Sony a6x00 series seems only 4K-30p limited and 8bit record if I'm not mistaken?

That's correct at present. Sony's about to announce some kind of camera but no idea if it will be in the APS-C line.

With the handle you get XLR audio inputs in the FX30.

It is a huge jump from Panasonic. Take the upcoming S5 II X, not the S5 II if that is your choice. But the capabilities seems to be impressive really.

Yes, the L-Mount lenses take also money, what I see as one disadvantage here (for me at least, since I work now with Canon lenses).

Alternatively options seems GH6 ? M43 lens investment is another consideration.

The GH6 is great too. I have here my old GH4 and some lenses, but devided against the GH5/6 and went to the Pocket 6K and 6K Pro.

EF mount to L-mount converter. - You still have a chance to go.

Besides Sony e-mount, I have only old Nikon lenses - must work manually. OSS is not functional.

Right, I am aware of the Sigma converter. But this converter works with Sigma lenses only, and I have also Canon lenses. But there are other converters too.

Even more expensive, but a great camera would also be the FX6. If one can spent the money.

I guess if I were in the market right now, and had the funding, the Panasonic S5II X would be the choice. For a couple hundred more than the S5II, it is giving you a lot more options. And since it's out there already in price (for me at least), I'd go for the "X".

But again, it depends on what you are already using and what investments you have in it. As I wrote previously, the GH6 would be what I would buy since I have an investment in M43 lenses and really can't afford the added expense of the full frame S5. But I certainly would LOVE to have one, even with just the kit lens!
