YouTube video ads

YouTube has emailed me offering to place ads with some of my more popular videos. It's not clear how intrusive these ads would be, or how much money I'd earn. If this means my videos will have pop-up ads like I sometimes see, then I'm probably not interested. They'd have to offer some serious coin before I'd wreck my videos with that crap.

I suppose my question is, has anyone here been offered to allow ads and done it? Are the ads the type that pop up on top of the video? Or just text ads off to the side? And how much money could a popular video actually earn? Again, I doubt I'm interested, but I'm curious about the process.

How much are you paying YouTube to host your videos? Oh, nothing? You're not compensating them in any way? I wonder how they're staying in business.

They may start putting ads on your videos anyway.

The ads cover the bottom of the video.

There is a corner X to close the ad window, but it is ridiculously distracting.

Everybody wants a free lunch. Once again, YouTube is hosting your videos completely free of charge and this requires quite a bit of expensive technology. Seems to me that they should be allowed to put an ad anywhere they like. What you call "ridiculously distracting" they might call "effectively placed."

I read up on the ads once & you should be pretty careful on what you post once you get the privilege of the ads. Anything illegal/etc. can get you in bigger trouble then just your video being taken down.

Put the ads on MY videos, and I'll split it with you. You can put 3-4 on each video.

Without the free videos on youtube, they would have nothing to market or put ad sales on. I think they would be wise to not make the people who provide them a free product angry by obscuring the product.

No one is forcing them to have expensive technology and post videos for free, that is their market plan.

They're losing a bit of money on each video shown, but they make it up on the volume.

Um, never mind.

They shouldn't, because it looks like a major intrusion, whereas the alternative used by Hulu and several others is to run a short commercial before the main content.

The latter leaves the real content undisturbed by "the moneychangers in the temple."
