Zoom licensing

We all know that the way to get a thread to reach into the 100+ response category is to mention copyright. This topic is so obtuse and complex (and unworkable) that it generates high passion all around.

I've come across a new service called Zoom, which supposedly will sell "credits" for roughly $4 ("the cost of a latte"--hmmm...). In turn, a credit will cover the use of a song for up to 25 copies ($.16 per song per DVD). Aimed mostly at wedding videographers, the whole idea is that now everyone uses copyrighted music illegally, simply because there is no workable way otherwise. Zoom figures that copyright owners would rather have a small chunk of change than nothing at all and a bad reputation for going after the little guy.

Only problem I see is that for many years there will be a very limited inventory, and some stuff will probably never be on the Zoom list. Still, I guess it's better than nothing.

EDIT:

I'm hoping I'm reading the FAQ correctly. If the Zoom people are suggesting that each instance of a song on a single DVD will cost $4, then they are nuts.

Riredale, bored with the current posting on the forums? Usually when I pour gasoline over a "non-lite bonefire", I carefully step back(alot) before liteing. Of course, this wisdom was gain after a few heart warming blasts.

Zoom does sound like start in the right direction, but Zoom will have a lot of footwork(legal) with different current groups protecting/collecting R-fees.

ouch. for "personal use" only. IE can't be sold to random people, only in "for hire" like projects (wedding videos, corp vid's, etc).

sadly, since you need to buy credits in at least a set of 100 (for ~$500), i won't be doing this any time soon. I'd rather buy cinascore (or whatever it's called) & packs for that. At least for what I do.
